EQ off when setting limiters?

#1 Post by laits »

I have a baseline EQ set for my ot12s (on my DCX2496) based on the inverse of the published charts. Do I keep this EQ on when setting limits on the tops?
Built 2-OT12 (3012HO); 2-T39 22" (3012LF); 2-T39 16" (3012LF);
2-J12 (DL2512); 2-W8 (Beta 8A)

The limiter is the last thing in the signal chain before the power amp. EQ or not does not affect the procedure for setting the limiters.
In build order:
O12 with no tweeter.
3 x WedgeHorns.
2 x Jack 10 without tweeters.
2 x DR250.
2 x 16" T39
1 x Tuba 24
2 x SLA Pro (sort of...)

EQ off, unless you need it to make the limiter engage.

Hmmm I wonder about this too.
Here's my thoughts.
I initially set my limiter with desk straight into DCX with input and output gains on 0
Since added a DEQ. So now it's desk DEQ DCX
If I push the high output (22dB) button on the back, then bump the curve on the GEQ as the OP has done (so since the graph is no longer flat, the gain from that alone is increased), my output from the DEQ will raise the DCX input level (relatively) and hence the output level too, making my limiter settings out of whack?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

It doesn't matter what's before the limiter, at all. Think of the limiter as if it were inside the amp itself (some are) - it's purely for limiting the voltage going into the amplifier.

When setting the limiter, it doesn't really matter what your gain structure is before it, as that's irrelevant - the EQ doesn't affect it.

You could equally be plugging an iPod/laptop/CD player/sound desk straight into the limiter the input, and you would still be able to set it properly (using a sine wave).

It should have no effect. Let's know if it does.
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.
