Question on reading amps

#1 Post by adviner »

Im trying to get a better understanding of this so excuse me if its been asked before. Planning it around a pair of T39's using BaseLite S2010 speaker

Im thinking of using the BaseLite S2010 which is a 8 ohm speaker with 150w rms
Im looking at Behringer EP2000 Amp which has:
2 x 1,000 Watts into 2 ohms; 2 x 750 Watts into 4 ohms; 2,000 Watts into 4 ohms (bridge mode)

My question is that it doesnt say it handles 8ohms. Does that mean I cant use it?

The other question is if i use the Crown amp XLS1000 which has:
Minimum Guaranteed Power per channel, both channels driven: 550W, Stereo, 2 Ohms (per ch.); 350W, Stereo, 4 Ohms (per ch.); 215W, Stereo, 8 Ohms (per ch.); 700W, Bridge-Mono, 8 Ohms;

which i look at 215W Stereo at 8 Ohms. Are these RMS or Max? If it is RMS, would the 215W be to much for the 150W BaseLite S2010

Thanks

A power amp supporting 8 ohms is a given. They will all do it without an issue.

The crown amp is sufficient. You can use pretty much any amp with any watt rating, just remember to limit the voltage that your drivers are seeing.

They don't label the speakers with voltage. Usually watts. 150watts @ 8ohms = 34.6 volts.
Builds:
T-39
DR 280
Wedgehorn 8
Omni 12
SLA
TAT
TLAH experimental

The plans say 28 volts for the S2010. Remember to read the plans at least twice before getting started.

One other question cause i see people talking about it and just wanted to clarify. Eventually I will be building omni tops 12 to accompany the sub-woofers. Right now im gonna use my powered speakers for the tops. My question is this. I see people talk about using one channel for the subs and the other channel for the tops. Is that OK to do? Or is it best to use two separate amplifiers?

Im assuming i would wire the subs as parallel to drop it to 4 ohms for one channel and the other channel for the tops also. I guess if you did this how would you connect your crossovers/limitier/etc like the Behringer or BBE to separate from the channels? Maybe Im not understanding it completely, so I was hoping someone can clear it up

Thanks

I guess i should have looked at an amp and see the back. I looked at the specs of the Behringer and it has two inputs so I guess this is how each channel would be control via the sound management system. Still, is this something that is wise to do? Having one channel for subs and one other channel for tops? Hoping that its ok cause it beats buying more than one amp.

That setup is perfectly fine. It's actually how i'm running my T39 with my Yamaha at the moment, but only in mono. Like you that'll be something for me to figure out when both of my tops are done.
