Beta 8a damage

#1 Post by Windmill » Tue Nov 13, 2018 8:56 pm

Just today I scored a couple of beta 8a’s for about half price in brand new condition. They arrived in the mail but one was damaged. The speakers were placed face-to-face but they were not zip tied together. The frame of one speaker damaged the cone of the other speaker. There are some dent marks and a partial flattening of the spider. There does not appear to be any coil rubbing. Will this affect the X max of the speaker? Should I recone it? I have been offered a refund so this speaker is essentially free to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Also is there a test I can run to see if both drivers are operating the same?

I think you’ll be ok.
Just go through the break in procedure and slowly bring on the voltage.
If there’s an issue, that should reveal it.

I say, if the cone is not torn run it. if it is torn, use shoe goo, or fabric glue or some kind of silicone. Parts express has some good speaker repair gear. Play both free air and listen then if you can’t tell them apart your probably good to go.

The speakers are now loaded in the w8’s and they sound just fine. I think the damage was just cosmetic.
