Joining two pieces of metal grill

#1 Post by Bruce Weldy »

Working on the SLA build currently.

I have some left over grill pieces from other projects that I'd like to use. Neither piece is big enough for the SLA...but, if I could find a way to put two pieces together (that doesn't look like crap) I'd like to give it a try.

I've considered just using a solid wood strip with a slot in each side, then finishing it like the cab. Probably a 3/4 by 3/4 strip.

It would run horizontal. As the grill is going to be 28x10 or so - that shouldn't look too bad.

Any other thoughts of a way to do this?

Big enough that I could put the splice anywhere from the middle of the cab to about 6 inches from either end.....

Neither piece is long enough to do a vertical splice.

Is grill cloth an option? Either in leu of a frill, or as a cover/façade to hide the spliced grill?

I've considered it, but I was trying to use what I have on hand. I don't have enough cloth to do it in one piece either...and it would look like a guitar cab.

That's exactly what I was thinking about, but had no idea what it was called. Unfortunately, at $20, I could order a grill for $27. Now, if I could find a way to buy only a foot of it instead of almost 8 feet.....hmmm.....I'll have to do some more looking.

Thanks for the link.

With some searching you can probably find something narrower at a lower cost. I just wanted to show you what to look for. Here's another: https://www.outwater.com/products/p611- ... hzEALw_wcB

I appreciate it. Problem is shipping - the minimum order is 8 feet and they want 14 bucks to ship it.....kinda' back where I started.

Can't seem to find it at any local retailers.....

Looks like it would be the perfect solution, but I may have to just go with wood or buy a new grill.

Anyway, thanks for the direction - it would really be the perfect solution if I had some laying around. Maybe I should go do a little scavenger hunt in the garage - I could swear that I've seen something like that somewhere.

Try this. Trim the excess width, paint it with Fusion spray paint. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sequentia-1-42 ... ng/3060129

Good find! I searched HD but couldn't find anything. I even tried the Wall panel area, but struck out. I'll check out Lowe's.

Thanks for doing the research.

They even have it in black, but I'd have to order it......I'm gonna' take a small piece of grill to Lowe's and see how the fit is on the white one. If it's good, I'll probably order the black....better than trying to paint the white one.

Thanks again.

There's a product similar to what Bill posted that you can usually get locally and reasonably priced. Wall panel moulding.

Yep, that's the one he linked too. I'm going to Lowe's to check it out in a while. All my parts just arrived, so it's time to go open some early Christmas presents!
