Any hope for use in BF design

Hey guys
I have a pair of old McIntosh speakers that the cabinets were damaged in a flood. I was wondering if I could use the speakers and xover parts and make some book shelf speakers or any of bills designs.

The Woofers awe morel MW224 and highs are MDT 28’s. I have extra 2 woofers

Can't see much of the cross-over specs except that the one of the caps is 10uf and 250 volts

Don't try to find something new for those drivers.
Build new boxes identical in dimensions and shape to the ones the drivers are in now, so you can transplant the drivers and crossovers.
Just don't use chipboard...

DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Thank you all for the replies. I think I will follow Grants advice and build similar boxes.

One more question, since I have 4 woofers could I add a woofer per box or would the xover need to be changed?

That's why I suggested what I did.
Adding more drivers changes impedance, and the crossovers in the cabs are for the drivers that are there.
If you added more drivers, you would need to change the crossover components.
Unless you have an inductance meter, you have no idea what the inductors values are, so that makes it more difficult to calculate what crossover is installed.

For what it's worth from a Neub, I agree with Grant.

I think if you wanted to change anything (an additional or different speaker, size of the enclosure, random filter parts) you would have to redesign the cabinet and filter network from scratch.
Were it me, I'd test all the parts for water damage, then rebuild the enclosure with the exact same shape, port size / shape / length and internal volume.

I wouldn't use MDF either, but it finishes cleanly with a sharp-bladed power tools and takes paint well. It can't take a hit nor moisture and can be a problem with screws and glue. And it's heavy.


Regarding identifying the value of an air-core inductor, it's not beyond the wit of man.
I might use a resistor of known value and an ocilloscope.

But if you have a micrometer or feeler gauge for wire diamers and can do a little math, you can estimate the value of the inductor by observation and calculation with Wheeler's Approximations.

You can also use the calculator from that website to reverse engineer your coil by plugging in values until everything matches your wire gauge and coil size.
