Could you 3D print a whole DR200 or 250?

#1 Post by J_Dunavin »

Got to thinking over the weekend... I wonder if you could print a whole DR?
You could print the high frequency section separate and if you printed it sideways you wouldn't need any support for the mid horn braces.
That would be A LOT of filement though. And take ... I dunno a week to print?

It could be done, but at what cost for the printer? They also could be made with molded construction, with just a few parts. Per unit cost would be very low, once you pay for the molds. They go for around $250k.

oh man! think of all the great wood working tools you could buy for that!
I had thought the 3D printing would be more... economical. Some of the fellas at work are really into that, but the print bed would have to be much bigger than most of the hobby one out there. So your right the cost of the printer and all the filament would be more than just building a set.
This guy could do it! it's only $12,000

I know a few Ppl who would print stuff for me, and have often thought 3d printing could be useful for building speakers. Need a pretty big printer to be able to print anything decent though, and that's a few years out before I get access to anything like that.
Built:

I recently had a friend cut out a bunch of templates with his DIY CNC machine. Basically a 3D printer with a router on it. It has a 48"W x 48L x 12"H workspace. He plans on adding a laser for etching/engraving. Now the hardest part of the builds (cutting circles) will be effortless. He said we could cut almost all the parts out. Guess I'll be making extra trips to the liquor store from now on.

Edit: I have a 3d printer and will be making a custom crossover tray for the SLA Pro.
BFM builds:
XF212
T24 BP102 24"
2x SLA's 6-5" mids, 9- gt-302's
2x AT 14" MCM 55-2421
TrT 5" MCM 55-2421
AT 18" JBL GTO804
2x OT12 flat array
2x SLA Pro 2-Alpha 6's 2-Goldwoods
2x T39 24" 3012lf
Simplex 10 BP102

I'd like to see someone 3d print a melded piezo array. could save a lot of cutting and gluing.

Now there's a good idea!
Anyone have a PDF or cad drawing of the 1016 piezo?
Ugh... But the driver, you'd still have to buy the whole thing, right? Guess this really isn't a money saving venture anyway 😄

You could print the horn for the compression driver option with a 3d printer. It would save you from cutting those small fiddly bits.
building BFM speakers isn't a hobby , it's an addiction

Ooo another really good idea!
Maybe I'll draft that up and see what it would take to print that.

If that's the same one as in the Otop Jarray then +1. That would cut a big piece of the build time

Same goes for precision throat and nacelle assemblies for the DR's.

80/20 rule. Don't have to print the entire cab, just the detail parts that consume the greatest bulk of the labor.
