Amp Sizing Help - OmniTB15 - Wedgehorn 10

#1 Post by jakejoseph »

I am building 2 x Omni Tallboy for FOH and 3 x Wedgehorn 10 for monitors for a PA system I am going to build. I need to buy amps for these. What amp size would you recommend for the FOH? Should I Biamp the Omnis? What size amp to power the wedgehorns?

I ran sound in the mid 90's, where I had to have 3 or 4 900 watt Crests to run my merlin FOH, and I just wonder what I need with these more efficient speaker designs.

Base your amp choice on the thermal rating of the drivers installed in the cabinets. No matter what amp you decide to use, install a limiter in the signal chain, and set your gain structure correctly.

If you built the O15TB, then did you install the crossover components? If so, then there is no need to bi-amp.

I haven't built them yet, so I can still biamp.

So, the thermal rating of the beta 10 used in the wedgehorn is 250W RMS. Two in a chain indicates a total power handling of 500W. So A 500W amp for the monitors.

The thermal rating of the kappalite in the Omni 15 is 450W RMS. So two in a chain is 900W.

Is this about right?

-1. Bi-amping is a necessity with high powered/high output separate subs and tops where passive crossovers are impractical. That's not the case with the Omni 15; it can be bi-amped, but if you're running loud enough that you need to bi-amp then you're building the wrong cab. Anything over 400w/8ohms is overkill with the O15. You'll never need more than 100w into a Wedgehorn.

Thank you Mr. Fitzmaurice.

A clarification - 100W per wedgehorn or 100W total?
Same for the O15 - 400W per pr 400W total?
