Big amps

#1 Post by DJStubbs »

So I don’t use my lab gruppen often because 30 amp plugs are not common enough in my opinion. But when I do it’s interesting.

So it’s 30 amp 110-230v which I have only used 110-120v.
My question is some generators I have seen that offer 240v twist connectors are 4 pole. The lab gruppen plm10000q has a neutrik 32 plug on it that is 3 pole. So how do I wire a 4 pole twist lock to give me 240v sufficiently. Also if I were to get a 50 amp plug off let’s say a generator could I wire that up to the lab gruppen as well?

lab gruppen manual: http://downloads.labgruppen.com/PLM_Ser ... _Guide.pdf
Powencon assembly instructions: https://www.neutrik.com/en/product/nac3fc-hc

From the lab gruppen manual:

"The label adjacent to the mains (AC) input connector indicates the AC mains voltage for which the
device is wired and approved.
The PLM 10000Q and PLM 14000 devices are available in separate 115 V and
230 V versions; the PLM 20000Q is only available with a universal power supply operating from 80 to 265 V.
Only connect the mains cable (AC cord) to an AC source of the voltage shown on the label"

Unless things have changed, it seems like your amp can only handle EITHER 120V or 240V, whatever it was wired for from the factory. You can still use the 30 amp 120v receptacle on the generator.
Built:
17" width 10" driver Autotuba
2 x 29" width dual Lab12 Tuba60
6 x DR250 2510/asd1001
In progress:
2 x DR250 2510/asd1001
For best results, point the loud end of the array towards the audience

What’s a good step to be stable though and reduce the possibility of overloading the breaker. 30 amps isn’t much. I’ve seen my pld4.5s hit 25 amps With 4 channels thumping. So I’m sure this lab gruppen will pull a lot more power. I’ll check what mine says. I’m thinking of getting another distro made with a 50 amp inlet and 30 amp outs but How do companies run multiples of these lab plm amps sufficiently.

I have a big Apogee Amp I seldom use much anymore, mainly because the fans are so noisy. I am running a bi amplified Peavey system, and my Horn requires CD Equalization. Currently I have a Mackie amp running the horn, and it has adjustable CD Equalization built in. Plus, it's fan noise is tolerable.

I've never seen or heard of an Apogee Amp......never knew they made amps. Thought they did mostly recording interfaces. Is it really old?

Hmmm, at first couldn't imagine why you'd need to tax an amp that size... then saw 18x Tuba 60 - Dual 12" LAB Oh yeah!!! Crank up the volts! I'd love you hear your system some day :-)

Yes, it is older, not ancient.

I tried searching for them, just to see 'em.....but, couldn't find 'em anywhere - even in Apogee's legacy products. Interesting.

I didn't see any ad listings pop up ...... so, I just checked the Apogee website. Thanks for the pics......I've never seen those....and I've seen a few amps in my time.

Did some more specific searching. Looks like these are really built for commercial installs. Lower power, binding post outputs only, and really expensive. They've just never popped up in my world of live sound.

Kinda' looks like Apogee and Apogee Sound International are different outfits. The amps line looks like they bought out Bogen and stayed in the commercial install world. Couldn't find any link between the two names.

Yeah, I've never heard of Apogee at all before now. Completely new to me. Looks like they're somehow related to Bogen, which I have heard of... high end (well... expensive) install stuff.

You are too young to remember the old Bogen PAs. We used one for our Senior talent show when I was in high school....That's it right down front......Spring of 1975.

Yup. I was still in cloth diapers and probably still nursing in the spring of '75.
