Factor PA2000

#1 Post by chrisj360 »

My work updated all the A/V gear and was giving the old stuff away. Snagged this and it seems like should run a pair of Otop12's just fine or the a pair of T30's okay.

Definitely not looking a gift horse in the mouth.... :) It should play nicely with my 2 Crown XLS2500's for the 2 Otop's and soon 4 T30's.

Got also another Factor PA1000 as well and some wireless mics. :hyper:

Thoughts?

I am thinking of running the Otops off the PA1000 (RMS Power @ 8ohms Continuous 350W according to the specs & if I am recalling right the Otop12's with the Deltalite's have should be limited at 25 volts giving them plenty of headroom at 52 volts) and then two T30's off each Crown XLS2500 ( 2400W bridged @ 4ohms giving them also plenty of headroom 97 volts to the Lab12 50 volts) to give them the same limiter settings from the dbx PA.

Guess I'll keep the PA2000 in the reserve in case something goes south.

I don't like bridging per stated in the plans but previously running the Crown's, I know they didn't have much headroom (440W at 8ohms being 59 volts or 775 at 4ohms being 55 volts).

Am I missing anything?

The PA1000 is probably good for 2 x Otops12's a side.

The 2510 can be limited to 40V, so the 2512 you're using is probably good for 45V.

The PA1000 is doing 46V at 4 ohms, and that doesn't seem like any headroom,
But the 2512's will distort well before they reach their voltage limit. If you hear distortion, turn down, or add more cabs...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

I tried this a few years ago. Having to try and limit the signal that much - to get it down from 97 to 50 caused me some gain issues in the drive rack if I remember correctly......sorry, just can't remember the exact issue. That's why I went with the XLS1500 bridged - closer to the correct voltage with plenty of headroom.

I think that by limiting the output of the Driverack that much, I was hitting the lights on the inputs to get enough signal before limiting.....sorry...just can't remember exactly.

Thanks Grant for sharing about the Otop voltage and amp thoughts.

Cheers Bruce for letting me know about your past experience with the Crown's 2500 in bridge mode. I hadn't thought about that when theorizing about the potential set up. "With great power, comes great responsibility..." or limiting...:)

How much headroom should one be looking for in an amp versus what the driver can take? 1/3 the voltage as a ball park number? The Lab12 takes 50 volts at 8ohms for 312W. The Crown XLS2500 does 59 volts at 8ohms for 440W unbridged. I remember previous conversations about peaks in watts & voltage, hence the brick wall limiter.

I would give the 2500s a try with one per channel - set the limiters and see what happens when you hit it hard. A blinking light won't kill you on the amp.....just don't want it staying lit. And at 50 volts - I would think it would be alright.

As to how much you should have in headroom...... the 1500s bridged are about 1500 watts at 4 ohms. So, with limiting to 55-56 volts, it a little less than double the power needed.....

It's worked for me for several years....have yet to blow a sub driver....but then, I probably don't push 'em as hard as you young fellas do.
