Crown XLS Series

#1 Post by Specsto »

Hello, I am new here and I understand from reading that I can run Crown XLS amps on a new system. I am looking to finish my 2xDR250s loaded w 2510s and then build two t39 subs loaded with 3015lfs. Right now I have a Crown xls1500 and I can possibly get a XLS 1000 shortly. This system would be more than enough for my reggae band right now. Could I expand the speakers in the future with this system?

Thx

T39s only take up to a 12". T48s can take a 15.

If you use the premium drivers in the subs, the 1500 can handle two of 'em in bridge mode - with limiting of course.

But, that means only running two per amp....no more.

The 1000 can handle to tops in a rig this size.

When you get ready to expand, you'll have to make some decisions on whether to buy another 1500 for 2 more subs, or get a bigger amp that will run all 4, then use the 1500 for tops.

Thx Bruce,

After I posted the question (which I started to pm you about) I realized I typed in 3015 instead of 3012. Thx for the quick response. So if I get another 1500, I can do 4 dr250s?

The 1000 can run 4-250s. You won't be running them anywhere near wide open with only two T39s. Once you upgrade you system to 4 T39s, I'd consider getting them a little more headroom. I run my 4 OTops off of an XLS2500. Lots of room to breath and hardly even lights the lights.

Thx again Bruce,

I am just going to clarify. I can run 4-dr250s on the XLS 1000 and 2- t39s on the 1500; with or without bridging? Also I was considering picking up a driverack px to control/protect everything.
Also after reviewing the plans I am not sure if I should get the Lab12s or the 3012. The Labs seem to have a higher excursion and since I am going to build slims maybe the lower end will be better, especially for reggae.

Oh and my name is Tony.

Thx

Hey Tony,

You can run 4-DRs on the 1000. Two per side. That's 350 watts at 4ohms per side. Plenty at this point.

On the subs - you'll need to bridge the 1500 to get 1550 watts total at 4 ohms. You will definitely need to use a limiter to keep the power in check. I've run 3 1500s bridged for my six subs for several years with no issues.

The driverack PX will do everything you need....just be sure to check with the forum when you get everything built to make sure that you are setting the limiter properly.

As an aside....the limiter in the Crown amps means absolutely nothing to you in your setup. Don't think that you are getting protection from that....you aren't. You must have the driverack.

The 3012LF and the LAB12 are voltage limited the exact same as per the plans, so there is no difference in output. The 3012LF is much lighter......so, that's what I used. The weight savings is worth the extra 10 bucks.

Thx Bruce.

I will get the XLS1000 then as I think an upgrade won't be needed for a bit. Also I wasn't sure about the 3012lf so the $10 is nothing for the savings on the back.

Again many thx. Off to build and buy.

I thought you already had the 1000. If you are buying new, then I'd go ahead and get the 1500 for the tops also.

That way, you'll have a little more headroom and can use that one in the future for two more subs or have redundancy should you lose a sub amp - you can usually find something laying around to run tops in a pinch...but, having a backup for subs is a good thing.

If money is an issue, then grab the 1000 and it can go to monitors at some point if you need it.

No I was just about to buy one used but the guy won't budge on the price. I might get the 2000 though.

On another note, I picked up two Lab12s for half price. The guy wanted to sell me two more plus a set of kappalite 15s for cheap. I had to run before he cleaned me out.

So I now have 2 Lab12s the dr250s and an XLS1500.

Don't get the 2000. It's too much power bridged and not enough without it. Stick with the 1500 for subs.

Another question. How do you find the response between the t39s? I'm worried about slims not getting low enough.

I run live sound through mine, so I'm not looking for really low content. To protect my T39s, I run 'em high passed at 47-50hz. And there's plenty of low end.

And the only difference I find between the 20 inch and 25 inch is a little more volume from the wider ones. But, that's a pretty subjective opinion - I haven't put them side by side and tested. Just listening to 'em when they are stacked up.

The difference between narrower and wider subs of the same family is efficiency. I use my wider ones when I have transport space for them, but sometimes I don't!
