1 Amp for 2 pair SLA Pro?

#1 Post by rbarone »

Hello- I am building out 2 pair of SLA Pros - a pair of 4x6 & a pair of 2x6. Running as suggested, with the 2x6's under the 4x6's, is there any consensus on a single amp to power all 4 speakers? Thank you very much. - Rob

You can do this, but you have to make sure you get your wiring correct. You have two options. You can run the 4 driver pair together and the two driver pair together on separate amp channels. You won't have stereo but you'll be able to power shade the pairs separately (not a big deal with these, really).

The better option is to series wire the 2 driver cabs (they'll be 16 ohm cabs, but that's OK) and then wire the 4 driver cabs as 2 pairs of series wired drivers (which is what you would normally do anyway). Then, you can just daisy chain one to the other, and all drivers will see the same voltage, because you will have three series wired pairs of drivers all paralleled together. You should also take care to wire the tweeters similarly and have exactly half the tweeters in the smaller cab as you do in the larger cabs. In the larger cabs, wire two halves of paralleled tweeters in series with each other, and leave them all paralleled in the smaller cabs.

In other words, imagine you were doing it as three small cabs and wire it like that, just internally paralleling the two cabs together to make a larger one.

Hope that makes sense..

If you wire them per the plans the 2x is 16 ohms, the 4x is 8 ohms. That means that if you wire one of each to the same amp channel all of the drivers will receive the same power, with a total load of 5.3 ohms for one 2x plus one 4x. Any amp rated for 4 ohms/channel will handle that, and you only need one cable to run to either side.
If you want the option of running the 2x at a lower volume connect both of the 2x to one amp channel, both of the 4x to the other. As the pair of 4x will give a 4 ohm load you're still OK with an amp rated for 4 ohm operation. The only complication is that you'll need to run separate cables to the 2x and 4x.
