7.2 amp thoughts DENON AVR-X4000

#1 Post by Fushie »

Morning all,

I'm starting my 7.2 build soon, was originally going to be 5.2 but thought hey why not 7.2. Can't ever have enough speakers :-)

Anyway, I'm building myself a pair of TLAH's, Curved SLA, 2 Pairs of SLA (thinking of doing half sized SLA's) and a pair of THT LP's. Will be built with recommended drivers and to spec in plans (except the half sized SLA's)

I'm very close to talking my wife into letting me replace our reciever aswell. Ive been doing some reading and I was originally think of heading down the Pre-amp and individual mono block amp path. It's still my preffered option but I just can't justify the sort of money I would need to spend to do that. I've been looking at the Emotiva range with their

UMC-200 preamp http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/pro ... cts/umc200and a whole bunch of
XPA-100 mono block amps
http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amp ... cts/xpa100

I love the idea of having all these amps looking all intimidating and stuff but I get the impression it would be complete over kill power wise and I'm not sure that i personally would notice a difference in quality.
upon further hunting I came across the

DENON AVR-X4000 http://usa.denon.com/us/product/pages/p ... 0(denonna)

The Denon X4000 would be a lot less wattage but I gain a lot in bells and whistles in regards to Audyssey Platinum including MultEQ XT32, Dynamic Voulme, Dynamic EQ, LFC and SUBEQ. I also love all that netwrok interagtion that the Denon provides.

My questions are:

Has anyone here had any experience with the Denon AVR-X4000, is it a quality unit and does it perform as stated in specs?

Will the Denon provide me with enough grunt to drive my cabs loud and hard ( I have a fairly small lounge room about 12 foot by 12 foot)

To drive the THT LP's I was thinkiing of getting myself two

Dayton Audio SPA250 250 Watt Subwoofer Plate Amplifier
http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-aud ... r--300-803

But I am not sure if that Audyssey SubEQ will be enough or if I will also need a MiniDSP unit or should I think about getting myself one
MINIDSP PWR-ICE125
http://www.minidsp.com/products/plate-a ... pwr-ice125

I'm just not sure if 140 watt will be enough to drive the THT LP's loud enough for my liking.

I would also love to hear about other suggestions for recievers. I would like to keep the cost of the AVR under $2000 including shipping to australia. The Emotiva path would cost me about $3500 shipped and I could get the Denon AVR-X4000 for around $1300

thanks in advance for your thoughts

I am pretty sure a couple XPA-5 s would power pretty much all of it. OR one XPA-5 for the surround, and and XPA 3 or 2 fort he fronts with two plate amps for the THTs.

I personally don't have Emotiva stuff yet but plan to get some for the basement when its done.
