Behringer EP vs iNuke vs Peavey IPR

#1 Post by Nordo »

I was wondering what experiences you guys have had with the iNuke series as opposed to the EP series.
And also how do you think the IPR series stacks up against both of these Behringers.

Advantages, disadvantages, etc

I seem to recall there being a loooooong thread on the iNuke series, I think it was the supposed 1000w model which ended up kicking out a 'massive' 22v with a sine wave.

The base level Peavey IPR (1600) will kick out a solid 52v with sine for not a ridiculous amount more. At least here in the UK the IPRs make more sense cash wise. The inuke 1000 would be fine for monitor use but not much else.

Do you want/need the DSP?
I'd be hesitant to have an entire system relying on a single Behringer product :?

I'm just looking at the basic amps.
I want an amp for two DR250s, another amp for two T39s, and further down the track, an amp for two monitors. Say a 3000, a 6000, and a 2000 respectively. There will be a Behringer DCX before the amps.

I'm asking not just for me, but I can imagine a lot of guys running into the same problem as myself.

Behringer stuff seems quite consumerish to me, especially the inuke series. Have to disclaim that I do not own any behringer amps so cannot say for sure. I have had qsc and carvin and no problems with either amps. I'm very hesitant to buy any amplifier that refuses to put a THD percentage spec at rated output power.

If you don't need integrated processing, could a big old second hand amp be an option?
There's always some bargains on ebay and graysonline, though the latter takes more effort.
I say this as a Crown or Australian Monitor could be picked up for less than a new Behringer or Peavey... and the reliability of old iron is worth sacrificing shiny things for.

I always considered Crown out of my price range, but second hand might be worth considering.
Cheers :)

Nordo,
If you don't have to go light you can get some old iron amps. All these lightweight babies mean people are selling off their old irons quite cheaply.
I got my Jands 920's via Aussie e-bay, they came from Brissy. The same seller recently listed more, but that auction finished with no bids. I paid a motza for courier, but you being there could go pick up. They weigh 35kg each.
280W @ 8 ohms, 450W@ 4 ohms both sides driven or 550W @ 4ohms one side driven. Built in Australia, a mainstay of many a touring rig and installs, designed to be sturdy and take the knocks of road travel.
I also have circuit details and user manuals for them.
Haven't measured max voltage, they aren't working to hard with my T39's limited to 35V.
Plenty enough for tops...

Contact me if you want the listing details, they are good people to deal with.

Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

If I hadn't lucked into a stupidly low priced set of xti amps I would have gathered up local old clunkers and a dcx. There have been 1000w/channel ZPE monsters going for $500
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.

Nordo,
The jands 920's have been relisted if you half interested.
The seller is on the gold coast...

I'll have a look.

BTW, Bill Woods from Peavey has returned my email enquiry confirming that the advertised power ratings for their IPR series is in RMS. Which is interesting because I had the impression (from somewhere) that the advertised ratings were peak.
However he didn't mention under what conditions - THD, etc.
