New THT owner

#1 Post by wuzzzer »

Last weekend I purchased two THTs that were built by member Rowan611. I demoed them at his house (actually we listened to the four that he has).

Absolutely nuts! I've had 5 different SVS subs, Outlaw Audio, Hsu and also four 15" Peavey Black Widow THX pro subs. The THTs are in another dimension. I'm still working on dialing them in but so far so good. I'm using a Crown X1000 pro amp to power them. The rest of my setup is Klipsch.

Anyway, just wanted to join and say hi!

Congratulations Wuzzer!

I saw some of your posts on the community.klipsch.com forums and was wondering how you liked the THTs.

I've had to delay my THTLP build because the amp I've ordered won't be in stock until the end of the year. I'll be pairing the THTLP with my La Scalas. As you can imagine, I'm keen to hear about the experience of others with a similar config.

Enjoy!

@DaveMacKay
THTLP's I built 3 this 24" and a pair of 30's
they now run on a minidsp 2x4 with BASH 300 amps and they are impressive, even in a 100 sq ft. mancave
but they really want more room to "breathe" hard

Is there a link or area that discusses proper placement? When I demoed the THTs at Rowan611's place he said they should be 18-20" from the wall behind them, mouth facing the wall behind them. He also said to place them firing straight into the wall, not angled.
They sound amazing where I have them placed but I have to admit I haven't tried moving them around at all to experiment.

I figured someone would have posted some direction for you by now... I'm not into Home Theater Audio at all. But from what I've read around here, more times than not, placing the subs in opposite corners (side of the cab against one wall, mouth firing into the corner about 18" from the other wall) provides the most even sound throughout the room. And the only way to tell is to experiment.

There's also "the sub crawl", where you place the sub at your primary listening position, play a low frequency sinewave, and crawl around the perimeter of the room, listening for (or measure with an SPL meter) places where the the sound is loudest. Theory is, if you place the subs in those "hot" locations, the sound will bounce around the room in reverse of the test and you'll get the best performance in your primary listening position.

But really, if they sound amazing in their current location and you're happy, there's no need to fiddle unless you're just the type of guy that's inclined to experiment with stuff.

There is a thread on sub placement and there's good information in it, but it's aimed more at pro sound applications.

Seth is correct about the subwoofer crawl. (it is not the watermelon crawl).

ImageI finally got a miniDSP 2x4 HD, UMIK and REW. Spent about an hour and a half calibrating the THTs. I was surprised and happy to see I had no nulls whatsoever in my initial sweeps and only a couple peaks around 52 and 74Hz. I added a steep 16Hz high pass filter and have them crossed over at 70Hz.

...At the position of the microphone. Unless you swept every possible listening position. If that's actually the case... that's great!!!

I know, in the last living room I tested, some seats are okay, some seats are good, and some seats are better. If your situation is great in all seats... that's awesome!!! Congrats on the flawless success  !

Wuzzzer... I apologize for the slightly critical response. It was absolutely the product of a glass or two too many last night (the band was pretty good). I value your participation on the forum and I'd like to concede any criticism that may have been relayed in my previous message.

I genuinely think it's awesome you're getting such great results and I really enjoy hearing about them!

Hey, it's alright. 🙂 I did just do one location, where I sit. Our couch can fit 3 people but 95% of the time it's just me. My wife is content with her soundbar in a different room. 🙄

I found the graph showing the before and after where you can see the peaks I was describing earlier.
