THT, What to expect from Premium driver?

#1 Post by El dillo »

What to expect from Premium driver UM15-22 vs RSS390HF-4 15".
I´m planning to build a second THTLP and i got some decision anxiety about what driver to go with.
  • Sensitivity ?
  • How much wattage/volt is it safe to power it with ?
  • What does it make it a premium driver (more SPL?)
I do know it got more volume displacement but also lower sensitivity so it should need more power to get the same output and theoretically it would get louder also because of higher VD.

Any other differences you might know...

There's not enough difference between the two to make a recommendation other than to buy whichever is on sale for the lower price. Loaded in the THT you should never approach the limits of either before causing damage to your home. Whatever you've learned or been told about how drivers work in direct radiators for the most part doesn't apply to horns.

The longer xmax would only allow you to knock more stuff off the walls and piss of more neighbors. along with the local constabulary. The only thing more destructive than two THT has the name 'Caterpillar'.

Good line....

I'll be interested to hear if that reference translates in Sweden.......

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

I am actually after the possibilty to flatten the frequency response a little bit better. EQ does not help over the different seating positions.

EQ can't fix room boundary effects, because as you've found a boost or cut that flattens response at one listening position makes it worse in another. Only with multiple subs can you fix room modes. When you double the sub count you get an immediate across the board 6dB sensitivity increase, which for equal volume halves the excursion per driver.

I know, I'm interested in the technical differences about those 2 drivers when installed in the THT.

2 THTLP’s here... you can get them flat, and you can get them LOUD with 2. mine are 31” wide. Located at the front and rear of the room mouths about 20” away from the corner. My bass is even enough for my room. I’m using the RSS Dayton subs.

I found a SUPER PREMEIUM driver. Over 28mm Xmax. I'll show my rafters who's Boss. I have two of these going in my 29" THT's this Sunday.

The more power you give them the harder it is to hear normal speaking dialogue while watching movies from all the rattling. I get so much noisy vibration from wall hangings and rattling windows at higher than normal volumes that it is not an enjoyable movie watching experience even though the bass is killer. I doubt I give mine much over 100 watts before I call it quits. At some point, you will have to worry about damaging your windows, although you will probably damage your hearing first.

I'm not seeing any Xmax value in the link you posted.
2 x recommended Daytons would be about the same cost as one of those drivers.
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

One of these has over twice the Vd as the recommended Daytons.

That might mean something if you needed it, but it's not like you're going to drive the cabs to max output anyway.
