DEQ 2496 RTA Measurements

#1 Post by djtrumptight »

I took a DR250 outside and RTA'ed my system again.I actually saved 2 different settings. The first measurement i took, anything greater than -6DB i raised to -6DB,anything greater than +6DB i brought down to +6DB,Then i went into the utility menu and set the gain offset to -6DB,from what i understand that way the signal will never clip in the area's that have 6 DB boosts (?).

I also saved a RTA measurement just as it measured with some +/-7DB and +/- 9DB dips and peaks.I plan to compare the 2 saved measurements and see which one i like the best.

Is there any benefit to using the -6DB gain offset i'm using in the first measurement ?

So which setting sounded better?
2 DR250s, 2 27" Lab15 T-60s, 2 30" Neo Titan 39s, 1 Autotuba...and looking for more!

Where you are testing makes a HUGE difference, too. Ignore anything below 100Hz, and be at least 50 feet away from anything. If you are having +/- 12dB swings, there is something going on.

Umm please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

When you alter peaks and dips by + or - 6dB you are basically heading to a flat response.
If you then alter gain to -6dB all you are doing is reducing output to the DCX by +6dB

I did much the same (ie "mirror image" the SPL chart).
I didn't alter the gain.

I actually find it quite difficult to set up mixer structure to just below clipping and then get clipping in the DEQ. The odd clip every so often isn't a problem.

What's more important is not having clipping occurring a lot on the DCX...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

the-6/+6 sounds better.I agree DJPhatman, and i know what it is.I have a large backyard but when i took that measurement i had the cabs back about 25-30 ft.from the back of my house.I have an even bigger field across the street from me.If i can finish my roof early enough tomorrow im gonna take a cab across the street in the field and measure.

I wouldn't invest a lot of time measuring them in a field, unless that's where you're using them. The purpose of EQ is to get the best sound possible in the room where you're using them, and every room is different.

I now have a DEQ for both of my systems so i will be using the measurement mic from now on.
