setting limits on 2496..a little help to make sure

I have the limiter set to about 55 volts, just under the 60v max for the 3015LF. The red limiter light comes on even with half volume. I assume this is the peaks in the bass? I've been turning the limiter "on" when the voltmeter says more than 60v, then dialing down the threshold to the 55v. What should the threshold be? 6dB? The procedure is not clear to me, and the attack and release/ratio confuses me also. Can anyone direct me to an existing post? Does the dynamic eq attack & release/ ration affect limiter settings?
