Folks,

I am relatively new in the speaker building world and I have a very basic question. I am planning to build two SLA PRO 4x6 with the recommended eminence alpha 6 and 6 twitters. Also, I will build two TUBA 24 (24 inch wide with one kappa pro in each one). I have all the components already ordered on speaker hardware.com. The only thing missing is the power amplifier. I have in mind the Behringer NX4 6000 but I don’t know if it is the best option and also, I don’t know how much power I need to take advantage of the speaker system. My budget is $700 dollars for the power amplifiers. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

While it would work, you may consider two separate amplifiers, one for the mains and one for the subs.
I know the ligature also states it has limiters, but you should for sure consider a dedicated speaker management device, such as a DBX drive rack. There you will be able to take advantage of better limiting and a much better on board crossover, so you can high pass the subwoofers as well.

Contrary to J's opinion, I personally like to minimize my use of rack space. There's good reasons for either avenue, so it just boils down to your preference and goals. Personally, I'd run highs and lows on one 2 channel amp before going to 2 amps.

I haven't really heard too much about the newer Behringer NX amp line. My NU4-6000 went kaput. Goes into protect mode immediately upon powerup. Haven't really used it much, so don't know what that's all about.

I'm not sure what part of the planet you're on, but there's an open box Crown XLS 2502 on Amazon right now for $585. That would be a good way to start too.

The Kappa Pro 10LF in a T24 needs to be limited to 45volts. To calculate watts from volts... volts times volts divided by ohms equals watts. So, the subs would need an amp of at least 250 watts to get the most out of the cab. The SLA Pros do fairly well up to 56volts/400watts. (BTW, the NU4-6000 (and presumably the NX4-6000) put out about 49 volts.)

If it's not too late to cancel, and you have the funds... I'd give the KL3010LF some serious consideration. They would match up well, power wise, with the SLA Pro's and the amp above and get you another decibel or two of peak output (head room).

+1 for the Kapalite 3010lf. Buy once… …if you can find some.

The original 3010LF (with 4 bolt holes) has been discontinued. The new version is available - the KL3010. However, Eminence has -0- on hand right now. They are still struggling to get the parts to build their speakers. I've had a guitar speaker back-ordered from them for a couple of months.

I did notice some retailer with the 3010-4ohm version....I'd stick to the 8 ohm if you are buying some.

I sent an email to Leland to change the order, I want the 3010lf now. I am waiting for his answer… The alpha 6 are sold out too and I will have them at the end of this month.

Regarding to the power amplifiers, I will be transporting the system to use it every weekend, so the least amount of racks/weights will be best. I would like to buy the DBX drive rack, but is out of my budget for now.

The DBX driverack is a must, not preferred or a maybe.
If you're planning to use this system every weekend, what happens for the second weekend after you blew up the subs because the amp based limiters were inadequate?

These subs don't complain as they near their limits, they just stop working. This is quite different to "normal" direct radiator style boxes that exhibit distortion as they get pushed to their limits.

Protect your investment in the KL3010 with the DBX driverack.
You will find them quite cheap (used) on ebay. It doesn't have to be the latest PA2 version.
The PA, PA+, or other older styles will do the job you require...

KL3010LF-8... Amazon has 2 in stock and I saw 1 in stock for a Reverb seller at about $20 less than Amazons price

Unless you're grossly underpowering your Tuba's, I wouldn't consider a Driverack (or Behringer dcx2496) an optional piece of equipment to save for and buy later... unless you're also willing to risk needing to buy a Driverack and more drivers later (to replace the one's you blew because you didn't use a proper brick wall limiter and high pass from the get-go). You can pick one up on ebay for $200-$300ish and a Crown XLS2502 for $450ish. Put's you darn near your $700 amp budget, will have all the power you need and the protection to run your system at it's peak without blowing drivers.

If you don't mind my asking, Ismael... What's your plan for the system, what sorts of venues are you going to use it in? Live music? Recorded? What genre?

This not an option. PA, PA+, or PX will do everything you need. You should be able to pick one up (depending where you are) for $200. Check your local Craig's List, Reverb.com, or eBay as Grant mentioned.

I have 2 PA's and 1 PA+. I don't think I paid more than $125 for any of them

I bought the DBX Driverack PA2!!! Is crazy how everything is out of stock…Hopefully, I will have all the speakers at the end of July and the driverack in September.

I bought a DBX driverack pa2!! Reading all the comments, I definitely need one. It is crazy how everything is out of stock, so I will have it in September and hopefully I’ll have the speakers at the end of July.
I will use the equipment for live music (guitars, keyboard, voice mics) and also for vinyl records (disco house, hiphop jazz, electro house)… not very big venues. Mainly cafes and pubs.

Good move, I was worried for you going without a driverack. I have the PA2 as well, picked it up for under $200 with the calibrated mic, so good deals are out there. Great unit, easy to use, especially if you use the app. Just plug in a cheapo wifi router and connect via your phone or a tablet. Makes navigating the menus and changing settings very convenient.
