Sealed Simplexx 1x12 Speaker Selection - 3012LF or PB112

#1 Post by Jakevw »

I have recently made a Sealed Simplexx 2x12 (tweeters eliminated) with Eminence BP122 Speakers (2x 8ohm - wired for 4 ohms). Sounds very good, I'm impressed: Very articulate, and remarkably even.

For smaller gigs and practicing I'm going to build the Simplexx 1x12 sealed with no tweeter, and am considering the Kappalite 3012LF. The goal: Even, articulate, punchy, tight. I'd be using the 1x12 for electric and uprigtht (jazz, R&B, funk, experimental).

If I build using the 3012LF 4ohm, I could also bring the 1x12 on gigs as an extension cab to the 2x12 (also 4 ohm), to add a bit more volume and bottom end support from the 3012LF. I would use an external box to wire the two cabs in series, to bring the pair of boxes up to 8ohms. Using the 1x12 as an extension cab isn't priority #1 with this post.

Some questions:
1.) Will the 3012LF perform well in the Simplexx 112 sealed design without a tweeter?
2.) Will the 3012LF sound good at low volumes in the Simplexx 112?
3.) How will the upper mids and highs of the the 3012LF in a sealed 1x12 Simplexx (without tweeter) compare with my sealed Simplexx 2x12 with the BP122s (no tweeter)?
4.) Thoughts on pairing the two above cabinets - my amp is MB Little Mark Tube 800.
5.) Some claim the 3012LF 4ohm isn't as good as the 8ohm. Am I splitting hairs on this question?

Do you see any mistakes I may be making?

Thanks for the support!

The 3012LF does not have specs that work well in a sealed enclosure. From the plans: A sealed cab must use a high Qts driver. A low Qts driver in a sealed cab will have a weak low end.

Never mix different speakers unless one is a top, one is a sub, driven by separate power amplifiers using an electronic crossover.

Very helpful - I forgot to re-check your specs regarding QTS - thank you. It is too bad the Eminence specs list the 3012lf as an eligible candidate for sealed enclosures. Truly grateful for your advice.

How do you feel about the BP112 in a 1x12 Sealed Simplexx?

Just gonna throw it out there... you could build two BP112 singles, giving you the one for home/small gigs, the 2x12 for medium gigs, and four for larger gigs (achieving your externally wired target 8 ohm load)

Food for thought.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

I'm a little confused. I went to the plans for the Simplexx 12 to see if the 3012HO was an option, but then found that my plans (12/14/13) list the 3012LF as a recommended driver. I couldn't find an option for building it as a sealed cab. Also couldn't find the reference to high Qts. Am I nuts? Or is there an update that offers a sealed option?

Or, can I just not find it in the plans. It's possible......I'm old.....

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210
