6 T48, 4 Ot12 @ Vortex room Raleigh NC

#1 Post by sine143 »

Heres a phone vid of the system. its a LARGE room, with an inset dancefloor (dancefloor is 3.5 feet lower than the rest of the space). Only had a single 15 amp circuit to work with so no where near max output.

Built:
2x Tuba 30s delta12lf loaded (gone)
4x Otop12 d2512 loaded
8x t48s (18, 18, 24, 24, 30, 30) 3015lf loaded
2x AT (1 mcm, 1 gto 804)
2x SLA Pro (dayton pa6, 6 goldwood piezo loaded)
1x bastard XF208

2x OT212 (delta pro 450a loaded, eminence psd)

Very nice! Couldn't see how the OTops were positioned. Are they on stands? How are you powering 6 T48s? 3 separate amps? 3 subs on each channel of the same amp would be a 2.5 ohm load per side.

they are actual 10 ohm nominal boxes (as per the plans), so it would be a 3.33 *nominal* load.

4 otops on a crown xti 2000

6 t48s on a crown xti 4002 (limit at 52 volts in the vid). will *soon* be upgrading to itech 5000hd hopefully

the otops are actualy stacked on a sawhorse with a piece of baltic birch on it on each side lol. all the venues I play at have at leas 3 to 4 foot stages, so this gets the lowest otop about 7.5-8.5 feet off the dancefloor.

For this event, funnily enough... the promoter forgot to supply monitors for his djs (although it was clearly outlined in our contract, and I made sure to remind him...oh, about every day for 3 weeks before hand). So I actually had to drag my otops back to be a couple of feet behind the dj table... which was not ideal, thankfully they still had about 15 db of headroom LOL.

I'm so bad at math...you're right, of course. I don't know how I came up with 2.5 ohms. Thanks for setting me straight. 3.3-ish ohms is an easy enough load for any 2-ohm per channel capable amp. For an amp only rated down to 4 ohms (not sure about an XTI4002), I wouldn't want to push it all that hard. Obviously, the better the amp, the better your chance of not hurting anything.

7-8 feet is a good height for the bottom top as it ensures projection well out into the crowd.

Not that it matters...but just curious. In your video, the DJ is female. I've never met a female that builds her own cabs. Is that you? I mean, anyone who builds their own cabs is cool in my book. It's just unusual, that's all. :)

thats my girlfriend. we live togther, she's been helping me build and operate our sound company for almost 3 years now.

the xti 4002 is rate for 2 ohms. the highest limit level you can set it at ( in volts) is 70 volts.

that being said, It starts to complain with 3 cabs limited in the 50 to Sixty volt range, with high PSU temps (this night they were almost 75C) with 4 cabs I cannot get it to break 42C limited at Sixty volts.

Ah, OK. Thanks for the clarification. I'm just starting to get my little mobile DJ business off the ground. Definitely more of a "I come to your location and play whatever music you want" type thing than a club DJ. I plan on having my wife involved in it, but I'm not sure exactly how much she actually wants to do that. She would be great with the contact/arranging/booking jobs aspect of it, but any actual physical work will fall totally on me.

6 subs is a bit of an odd configuration to power. If the 4002 is 2-ohm stable, I don't see why it would fail at a 3-ohm load. Does it have proper breathing room in whatever rack it's in? Maybe a fan blowing on it?

that night in particular, the venue was likely abut 85 degrees F or higher... definitely need a fan in that situation. its in a 4u rack. It certainly didnt "fail" but it was MUCH hotter.

It was 85F inside? What kind of club is that? I mean, that's really hot for an indoor club. That kind of external temp would give most amps fits.

yeah, nightmare mode. what type of club for 800 supplies only a single 15 amp breaker :noob:

theres about 60 feet of dancefloor behind me at the farthest point I back up. then about 50 more feet lol.

A club on a real budget is what type of club supplies a single 15-amp breaker for sound reinforcement. What about the lights? Are those part of the club or are those yours? Granted that with today's amps, you can get a lot of sound out of a 15-amp breaker, but still, in a club environment where high-decibel sound is expected, you would think you'd have more power available to you. Good on you for pulling it off with meager resources!

those are the club install lights.

the particular club has garnered a terrible reputation due to the quality of their house sound. which is unfortunate considering they are packing a decent allen and heath small format mixer, driverack 260 and 6 qsc RMX amps. the cabs themselves, and whatever terrible processing they've done is the culprit. On a normal night there it typicaly sounds like someone has plugged an fm transmiter into the dj mixer to transmit to front of house, and the person at FOH has their fm reciever tuned about .2 MHZ off :wall:. In all my previous visits there I could not spend more than 10 minutes inside due to the sound. Got many good comments "this is the best this room has ever sounded" on this night.

Congrats, sine143, on the positive comments that you received. That will definitely help you out in the future.....and maybe encourage the club to get their system running better.
Kudos also, for running off of one 15A circuit, and still sounding awesome. (too bad the phone vid was distorted). Proves the efficiency that these cabs have.

1 15 amp circuit on the end of 50 feet of 12 gauge extension cord.... none of the breakers their amps were plugged into , or any breaker near the stage would work lol.

The clu will likely never improve their sound. been operating like that for 4 years.
