Mountain, Hendrix, Grand Funk still get airplay 50 years after their heyday. I don't see too many of today's acts doing the same. Certainly not Taylor Swift and the dozens of her clones.

"Tryin' to get into the sun...."
I thought I had it right, but you made me go look. Every lyric I learned in the 70s is suspect, what with the bizarre words, unintelligible singing, and horrible playback systems.
"Excuse me, while I kiss this guy!"

Uh, it's 'scuse me while I kiss your thigh'.
BTW, 'Louie Louie' isn't what we all thought back then. The Kingsmen didn't write it, they covered it. They never saw sheet music for it, so vocalist Jack Ely never learned the actual words. He sang the few words that he understood from the Rockin' Robin Roberts version that was playing on the jukebox in a club they were working and purposely slurred the rest. There were thousands of interpretations of what he was saying, but since it was gibberish none of them were accurate.

Re: Jack 10 LT Fin!
My favourite part about that story is that after years of investigating obscenity in the Kingsman version of Louie Louie, they completely missed the drummer dropping a stick and yelling "Fuck!" quite clearly at around 00:54.
Best version IMO is Toots and the Maytals.
Sorry OP, the cab looks great.

That's another urban myth. You can hear someone in the background shouting something at that mark, but it's not the drummer, because the drummer was the vocalist. Anything he shouted would have come through loud, if not clear.
Re: Jack 10 LT Fin!
Wasn't the drummer at the time Lynn Easton?

Re: Jack 10 LT Fin!
Jack played drums, keys and guitar. According to some reports he played drums for that recording, with a makeshift mic boom that required him to lean against the wall behind him while playing. How accurate the reports are is up for debate. The song was done in one take, along with the B side, in a one hour session, so it wasn't exactly a Steely Dan production, and Jann Wenner wasn't in the control room writing liner notes.
Re: Jack 10 LT Fin!
Used to do that one. Also a weird rhythm to sing over. I really had to focus.Bruce Weldy wrote: ↑Wed Apr 21, 2021 11:11 amYep, and try to figure out the second half of the second verse on Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers....

I get what you mean, but the barrier to entry of being a recorded and widely distributed artist back then seem to be comparably higher than now, it seems like that would filter out alot more crap, but also stifle innovation at the same time?still get airplay 50 years after their heyday. I don't see too many of today's acts doing the same.
lets say 10 years, 2011 Billboard 100, and take a look at how many of them I still hear in broadcast or on stream. *click*
Oh....oh, thats sad.
I mean Party Rock Anthem became a meme song, so that doesnt count, but just in the top 10, only the #1 have I heard, Adele-rolling in the deep. The rest i can't remember hearing in mixed company (except maybe Pumped Up Kicks).

Re: Jack 10 LT Fin!
Getting airplay today is much more difficult. Back then you could cut a record, get 50 copies made, then drive around handing them out to DJs. That's how 'Green Onions' became a hit. You can't do that today, but putting a video out on youtube and other platforms is an option that didn't exist even 20 years ago.
