 Anybody else suffer from "button up paranoia"? You know, that feeling that you're going to forget something when you finally commit to putting on the last side? When certain parts of the guts will no longer be accessible? What if a joint isn't perfectly sealed? Did I route the wiring the best way? Did I get it cleaned out well enough? Should I have...?

There is no denying this is perfectly on-topic in a thread titled "Things that go boom".

Sorry, bad joke. I could not resist. I am glad you came out mostly fine. Back to building even, thank goodness.

"button up paranoia" is a brilliant description. I know the feeling! Unless you need the cabs tomorrow it may very well be a good idea to leave the last panel off for one more day. You may have overlooked something. Or that utterly brilliant improvement pops up in your mind, just a few hours after you glued the last panel on.

Or your favorite tool is now forever stuck somewhere down there in the horn path :fruit:

Wee bit of progress. Got them buttoned up, trimmed off the proud edges and rounded everything over. I used a jig saw to trim the edges close, then a router against a straight edge to finish them off. Worked great. Maybe will try and fill and paint this weekend. Ribs are still a mess from the accident but everything else is feeling much better.

Raining outside, so will hobble around in the garage and see what I can get done. Here’s some pics of where I’m at for now...

Using Leland's trick of pinning some strips and using a pattern following router bit to lighten the big braces. Takes a little time, but much cleaner and prettier than with a jigsaw like I did last time. Great tip, Leland!
Also doing what I did on my first two tubas, as well as my j-arrays, in laminating 5/16" 6-ply BB strips to the outer edges of the mouth. Totally unneccesary, but I like the look of heavier construction, but without actually using 3/4"+ ply (and the weight that would come with it).
Also, I made the big braces by laminating two pieces of the 5/16" stuff together. All the inner braces were just single thickness. With everything being BB, they're ridiculously rigid.

Inside, sure, but the the big 6/12 braces at the bottom are visible. Now, whether anybody really looks is debatable, but I know I will  :-) I actually didn't even bother with putting any cutouts in the internal braces this time, except for the 1/10, which I just hacked out with the jigsaw. Figured the internal braces were 5/16 instead of 1/2, so already lighter. The front of the big bottom braces end up being grab handles when moving them around, too, as didn't put any handhold cutouts in panel 12.

Just giving you a hard time......my neighbor across the street works in metal and I work in wood....we are constantly giving each other hell about how anal the other one is.

Risers with rubber feet to match the height of the rear casters. I love these, have used a ton of them. Super chunky and solid. And cheap. 8 pack on Amazon from reliable hardware is usually about $5.

Sun's out, supposed to be about 60F today, so I think I'll see if I can finish one of the most satisfying parts of the build - putting on the Duratex. Not easiest or most enjoyable, but satisfying in watching a cabinet "turn pro". Those of you who finish your cabs this way already know, but for those of you who don't, I can't recommend Duratex enough. Nothing screams amateur hour like stained plywood or painted ply with the grain all showing through (unless I suppose you built your cab out of birdseye maple or bubinga and finished it like fine furniture).
I have never had anyone guess I built my cabinets, nor not think they sound incredible. Ever.
There are those who listen and trust their ears in coming to a conclusion about how a system sounds. I wish there were more of those...
Then there are those who listen with their EYES as much as their ears - who'd have thought a little <xxxxx> logo on the grill could make something straining and farting out sound so much "better"??? Anyway, there seems to be plenty of those folks around, so why give them another hurdle in preventing them from hearing how great your system sounds?

Just rambling while waiting for some flat black latex to dry on my big braces and the cab mouths. I put down some strips of tape where the braces will go. That way I can roll the Duratex in there without the braces in the way, pull the tape and then PL them in place after.

You are really thinking the details through, good work. If you like to go the next level, think about routing a recessed logo or name. I have WH8 on my wedges. Nobody understands what it stands for, but it looks totally pro.

Pulled the tape, exposing my “landing strips” for the braces. Entire cabs covered in flat black, innards and bottoms have a coat of duratex. That’s it for today.

Oh, I've thought plenty about it. Those big angled front panels are ripe for cool routered-in designs. I just can't make up my mind what I'd like to put there. I even considered putting some t-nuts behind that panel, so I could attach whatever kind of logo the occasion calls for. And rotate them depending how the subs get positioned. Too much thinking...

I like mine to be in "stealth" mode. Just black boxes that no one can see into. Then, they have to ask.

I agree, it's so very nice when they start looking finished, and yours are looking good

Personally, I find flush trimming and rounding over the most satisfying though. For me, that's when my cabs go from looking "eh" to "yeah baby!"

By the looks of it, the neighbors should be getting a treat within the next day or two. :chainsaw:
