Nid's XF412 build

#1 Post by N.Webber »

I'm building this one for a client. He already has the drivers (Electro Voice EVM-12L) and will bring them for me to install once the cab is ready.
I have started the build about two weeks ago but only now got around to writing this post.

Important disclaimer! My build process is NOT according to Bill's plan. I chose to start with the speakers baffle and work my build around it.
Also, because this cab is going to be covered with Tolex, I opted on completely separate back panels, as I think it will make the covering easier (no visible seams..)

So, Here are the baffles being reinforced with rings of 1/2" ply:
Image

The joined baffle is glued to the bottom panel:
BTW, I'm using the Gorila PU glue seen on the right. Great stuff.
Image

Top & bottom panels attached:
Image

A mockup handle and driver are placed to determine the handle's location with good clearance from each other:
Image

The first side panel is attached:
Image

And the cab is ready for Tolex'ing..
Image

As to the metal corner covers, I am using the regular square corner ones but need to re-shape the front four to match the cab's 8 deg. slope..
So I fabricated this metal jig which has the correct slope and rounded the edges to match the edges of the cab:
Image

The square corner is secured to the appropriate corner and hammered on top of a piece of hard wood to take the shape of the jig:
Image

And a dedicated 8 deg. corner cover is born (they will get another coat of black paint):

Now waiting for the purple Tolex to arrive..

:)

Beautiful work.....but, 80 lbs of speakers! Yikes.....

Must not want the box to break up at all - those are clean speakers.....

Cool idea with the corner mods. I've been wondering about ways to do something similar to make corners for my otop jarrays. May just have to try something like you did and see if I can reform them enough.

2xT30 (21", 3012LF)

I received the Tolex last week so I could finish the back panels (I was waiting to measure the Tolex thickness in order to determine the correct spacings)
Here are all the parts drilled, sanded and ready for paint (flat black - all the insides) and covering:

Today was a purple day..:

Close up of the modified front corner protector:

The back panels (the center panel is removable):

This is how the BF logo is held in place:

The jacks plate is ready:

My nameplate on the back:

BTW, I couldn't find the right countersink washers for the back panels (and grill) screws so I 3D printed a bunch..
STL file here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4789467

Tomorrow will load the drivers..

(eddited: added links to the 3D printed parts)

As usual you make me feel totally inadequate Nimrod. Don't let that put you off though. I always thoroughly enjoy your well thought out approach. It inspires me to step up my game.

Ok, The drivers got installed yesterday, project is complete.
This is a one heavy beast!! (49.3Kg = 108 pounds) but it is going into a rehearsal studio so not going to be moved around too much...

Image

And here's a view of the back with the middle panel removed:

Image

For those wondering, all 4 drivers are identical, The bottom pair are older version with a flat and thicker back plate.
The potential output of this cab is crazy. I wouldn't want to be in front of it at 1%..

The XF412 got picked up today.
The client brought a small (25w) old tube head amp and a guitar for a short test. we were amazed how loud it could get with this cab.
The wider horizontal coverage of this design was very obvious. A big and clear advantage over regular 'beaming' cabs.

this picture was sent to me by the client of the XF412 in its new home along side its 'new' mates..
