2x6 SLA Pro Build

#1 Post by Seth »

Building 2 shorty 2x6 SLA Pro's.

This is likely going to be a short thread. Having just finished up a T39, this thing's gonna be a piece of cake.

Today I cut all the panels and sketched out all the holes and contours.

I haven't sourced the damping material yet. Would ¼" thick felt carpet padding be sufficient, or would ½" thick produce a superior result?

1" (ish) mattress topper is the way to go I believe...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

The plans say:

".. the best material for damping is ½ inch thick felt carpet padding. ... Attach the damping with either spray glue or staples."

In the absence of any better advice, and if you already have 1/4 inch carpet felt, I would double it up with a light spray of glue between layers and use staples.

The reason for recommending 1/2" felt carpet padding in this project is that the cab is so small that thicker foam or polyfill would be a tight squeeze. 1/4" felt would probably do, I didn't recommend it because I've never seen any that thin.

Thank you Bill

I like the idea of felt, simply because it will look more tidy and professional when seen through the ports/handholds, compared to mattress topper.

That's why you take a can of flat black paint and spray it though the handle holes.....make sure and hit anywhere you can see through there....then there's no nasty light colors showing through your handles. That's what I did with my OTops.

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

Story time. Try 'n keep it brief.

Have you guys heard the term "living in possibility"?

I was scouring the internet, mostly Amazon, for felt carpet padding. All of what they offer is marketed for use under area rugs. It's a little spendier than I anticipated, that's why I asked about the ¼". I found some ¼" at a reasonable cost. However, when I went to order it, it's delivery estimate was 3 weeks out. As a matter of fact, all the carpet padding on Amazon is 3 weeks out. My guess is they put certain sections of their warehouse in trailers to make room for COVID stuff. Just a guess. Whatever... anyways, I figured I'd check Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. for felt carpet padding. Nope, nope, and nope. Ugly foam stuff, yes. But, no felt padding.

I started to go over the options in my head. Eh, I can just wait 3 weeks. Or, maybe Bill's right and I'll just find some behind a carpet store. No way there's going to be a carpet store open. Well, let's just try and look anyway. Who knows what can happen? Probably a waste of time. Googled carpet store in my town. Okay, 3 miles away. Let's go.

As I arive, I can see the back roll up door is open, but no dumpster. Probably closed for business and someones just there doing whatever. Well, let's drive around the front and look. Open!

I walk in and after a little light chit chat about the state of everything now-a-days, tell the guy what I'm looking for. He says follow me into the warehouse and we walk all the way to the back, toward a dumpster. I'm thinking in my mind... "no m-ther f--cking way! Bill was right all along." But, we didn't go to the dumpster. He moved a couple rolls of carpet and pulled from a stack, a roll of felt padding. Is this what you're looking for? He asks. Yes, indeed it is. I reply.

Now, I'm thinking in my mind, what sort of pretty penny is this guy gonna want for some of the roll? He says, "take it, it's yours. It's been on my shelf for over three years and I can't sell it. You're doing me a favor."

Well, I'll be. I didn't see ANY of that coming. Makes me wonder what I might be missing in life when I am not pursuing opportunities because I believe this or that about it. I hadn't ever thought of myself as pessimistic. But, perhaps I am? Pushed through it today though and it payed off! :hyper:

Lucky. I ordered mine online with rubber grippy backing. It did cost more than I wanted to spend, but yolo. I sprayed painted mine real good through the ports/handles, but it's still kinda gray looking. It's not as bad as looking at the wiring inside.

Seth, you want a set of crossover boards I 3D printed?

Decided to carve all the holes out today and start assembly tomorrow. Drilled starter holes for the jigsaw...
20200403_135444.jpg
Ended up getting some tear-out from drilling. Fortunately, on the inside side. Speaker holes cut.
20200403_155242.jpg
Chamfered the back side with a round-over bit to give a little extra clearance for the connectors.
20200403_161806.jpg
All carved up, chamfered, sanded, and ready to go together tomorrow.

Got going on assembly today. Made a mistake and fortunately caught it before the PL set. I put the back-to-main brace brace on the wrong axis/plane. Horozontal instead vertical. :cussing:
Didn't catch it until I mocked it up to the felt covered back.
20200404_191723.jpg
Other than that, I think it all went okay so far. Put the jack plate in, mounted a side to the back for both speakers, and attached felt with spray glue.

It was later in the day when I caught my mistake. Was kind of burnt out, so I just disassembled and cleaned the pieces for tomorrow.
