30" THT build.....Now I'm Hooked! DIY Fever!

#1 Post by jjlangdon »

I read reviews, looked at specs, read and learned all I could for a few years. Finally settled on the THT. My original plan was to do the 36" wide version. About halfway through cutting the panels, I realized that the widest door in my house was 30.5".....so a 30" cab it was! This is my first post....on any forum. I have a background in woodworking, so the cabinet was super easy, and fun to build! Cut and assembled in 3 days. Let sit to dry for a few more days. Got it in the house with the help of an appliance dolly, and some grit. I'm amazed....and am planning a 2nd one as I type this. 2x Tlah and 1x curved sla in "parts ordering" phase now. If you guys like this build, I'll post the build of the others as well. I can, and have, spent all day just looking at other people's builds!

I had a plate amp laying around(Dayton SPA1000.....overkill, I know), so I used that for now. I had looked online for examples of "cases" that people had made for plate amps. Not much out there- So here's mine! I used 90-degree Speakon connectors for the cable between amp and sub. Works pretty slick!

Here's the "finished" product. The pictures are before I re-painted the exterior....again. I sprayed a good filler/primer from a rattle can, then sanded smooth when dry. I tried to get by cheap and got a couple of those "Hammered Finish" cans of spray paint, in a dark pewter color. It gave a nice texture(like Duratex or spray-in bedliner), but is so THIN that I'd have needed about 15 cans to cover the grey primer. That is the stage it was at in the pictures below. I then rolled on a very good satin black cabinet paint. Not it is....well satin black....with a nice small "orange peel" texture to it. Not shiny grey with 50% coverage as the pictures indicate! Hope it is up to the standards I've seen here in the past! Thanks for the great product Bill!!

Hey, welcome to the Fourm!

That's a good looking cab, I really like mouth braces. Really "Sharp"! :fruit:

Also, I love how simple your table saw angle jig is. I may have to steal that idea.

Thanks! I scoured the internet for a "diy" taper jig for my tablesaw! You can buy them, but they're kind of pricy! This one works- made from kiln-dried poplar. So it's nice and straight, but stiff enough to not bend under stress of the blade! :-)

Thanks sir! I have no measurement gear, or an "audiophile" ear. I know the sound that I like....and this thing is IT. Clean, loud, low and effortless. I'm in love, and am already planning another one for the opposite corner of the room. I've played a variety of music, and watched a few movies. I am swapping to this from 2 older 15-inch Velodyne subwoofers. I thought I had deep, clean bass until a few days ago. It's pretty ridiculous how deep this thing gets, especially with the room gain. Best money I've spent in a long time. And as I said in the first post here....I'm officially hooked on DIY! :hyper:

I really wish I had seen the option to do that before I bought the THT....then TLAH...then Curved SLA.... Haha! Wood has been purchased for the matching THLA and Curved 9-driver SLA. The plan is painted MDF boxes and solid Black walnut front baffles. I may decide on something else(curly maple, cherry....) when I get to the hardwood supplier! Ya never know what treasures they're holding! Maybe make the entire thing of Padauk and make em FANCY! No matter what I do- the build will be posted here! You guys all rock!

No measurement equipment, and am waiting to do a full review once the TLAHs and Curved SLA are finished. Also looking into a minidsp to handle all of the channels(and 2 x subs). Then I will worry about room EQ-ing. For now, it sounds great. I guess "effortless" is the word I'll use? I haven't approached reference levels yet and I'm a little scared to! More.....as it develops!
