well here we go - THT build

#1 Post by Saleen4971 »

first post here, first build, and man did that take forever to get going this morning!

having to start all over getting tools together makes things difficult, and i didnt take many pictures. just the one today, after i decided to stop work.

have to cut the driver hole tomorrow, and make the ultimax mounting plate.

How wide are you making it? My guess is 24".

24.5 - i intended on going 30 but like an idiot forgot to count the 36x36 sides when buying plywood, so i knocked this one down to 24.5

next one will be 30", and built better since this one isnt going super well lol

got a few more panels done today - the hole is a big larger than i intended, and looks huge buy im using an Ultimax so its stupposed to be larger than the driver.

looking at things now it seems that last panel isnt exactly as it should be, and so it will be 1/2" off, but its too late to go back now :/

If you're gonna build another THT, build it the same width. That way you can couple them (which you're probably not). Someone smarter on here can say if the extra 5.5" is worth it.
BFM builds:
XF212
T24 BP102 24"
2x SLA's 6-5" mids, 9- gt-302's
2x AT 14" MCM 55-2421
TrT 5" MCM 55-2421
AT 18" JBL GTO804
2x OT12 flat array
2x SLA Pro 2-Alpha 6's 2-Goldwoods
2x T39 24" 3012lf
Simplex 10 BP102

My plan was to build a 30 in the first place, but that didn't work out. If I build another one it would be a 30 to replace this most likely.

Got one more panel on tonight - had to stay an extra couple hours at work, so I'm tired but needed to make SOME progress.

two questions - for the braces, and the driver mounting plate, don't HAVE to use the same 1/2" Baltic Birch, or can I go with MDF? I don't have enough left over to do it all out of birch, and I really hope I don't have to buy another $55 sheet just to get a few pieces. MDF is much cheaper so I would rather use that of possible.

Yes, you can use MDF since it will be an indoor-only cab.

About the 30" width, have you measured all your doorways to make sure that there is enough wiggle room to get the cab through?

Use cheaper plywood for the braces, MDF is a bear to cut and weighs a ton.

This forum got me to stop using mdf. I will never go back. Cutting tools last longer, saw dust is better, and other plywood types braced correctly have proven to work just as well.

I picked up some ply for the mounting plate and braces. Got one brace done - assuming the clearance notch I made deep enough for an ultimax. Hope it is. Including panel 4 thickness I have 1 3/8"

got off work early yesterday, and finished everything except the mounting plate, side panel, and access panel.

have to buy another tube of adhesive - those last few big panels sure take a lot! hopefully i can get the mounting plate and access panels done tomorrow and ready to close up sunday or monday

pretty sure ill be building another one in the future, and fixing a few mistakes i made on my first attempt.
