SLA Pro Crossover Question.

#1 Post by Jools4001 »

Hi all,

Happy New Year

It's been a few years since I last posted here, building a pair of Wedgehorn 8s and a pair of Jack 12 Lites. They're still performing well, even if a little bit gig battered, but I'm currently building a new system around a Simplex 18 subwoofer and a pair of SLA Pro Minis. I've built the sub, apart from paint and loading the driver and I'm halfway through the SLAs (which I have to say are the easiest BFM build that I've done so far); but I do have a question on the crossover.

For some reason, I found it difficult to get a couple of 0.3mH inductors quickly here in the UK, but I could easily get 0.15mH ones off the shelf; so I got those so that I could simply wire them in series to get 0.3. However, I remember posts about inductor orientation and issues with close proximity. Is this still the case when the inductors are simply running in series in the same part of the circuit? It's no biggie, I can space them widely and in different orientations if needed, but it would be so much neater to stick them side-by-side.

Subs? Big question mark!

Don't use two 0.15 coils, use one 0.3. Remember the tolerance is +/- 10%. This is not an uncommon size range, try another source.

Thanks Bill,

The 0.15s I've got are supposedly +/-3%, but it's still less than ideal fitting them on the board so I'll go with your advice. I've got some 0.3 ordered now, should be here on Saturday, which is later than I'd like but still enough time to get things built, configured and tested before they're needed on Feb 2nd...and if not, the Jacks are a pretty darn good plan B.

That's not what I meant. The tolerance for crossover part values is +/-10%, so the coil can be as low as 0.27 or as high as 0.33.

0.3mH inductors arrived today, crossovers built.

Thanks, Bill.
