Building 2- 12 inch tht to compliment my 15 inch thtlp
Well, I have almost finished my build of 2 12 inch Dayton 24 inch wide tht twins. They are being built to take the place of my "wall of woofers" and compliment my 15 Dayton 24 inch thtlp. I thought I would post a few pictures as I have been documenting the entire build. Also a few words of advise....after I built the first thtlp I wanted a track saw, so I bought one. WELL worth it! Also a pocket screw jig and a Dewalt router, as well as a ton of 36 inch clamps.Dont get me wrong this can be done with minimal tools but those tools I listed make it so much easier. I am adding a piece of figured walnut to the mouth braces and sanding the entire cab to finish it........I don't know yet. Up for ideas but no paint. They are sitting next to a pair of klipsch La Scalas. I purposely put the good side of all the panels to the outside so there are no defects or patches. Here are some pictures.

Here are some more recent pictures. Were getting ready to sell our house now so I'm almost at a complete stop...I would like to finish before we move so they have a new home to go to, but that's probably not going to happen, well see..

It may be a while until they get fully finished. Again I made the mistake of listening to them. I have them in the basement with my Marantz/Parasound combo. the Marantz is powering 4 Boston acoustic HD10s, 2 hd5s and a Boston center, the parasound power the subs.(This is a unfinished 30 * 30 basement, I use it for storage and a wood shop, no tv, just for music surrounding me.) Anyways, the amp is about 125 watts, With one THT running at 10 volts at 32 hz the ceiling shakes so bad I think the furniture upstairs is moving. The wood I have stored overhead started to fall. No way I was going to have both THT's going at the same time. We are moving in 20 days so I am tearing down my theater so unfortunately they will not see the THTLP with the 15 in it. I have to be honest, I didn't notice much of a difference between the 15 and the 12. They are totally different rooms, so that plays a part, but the 12s sound amazing, clean and efficient as well. I didn't expect the sound I got. Very nice.
I am looking for opinions on the birch finish. I have linseed oil, danish oil, tung oil, poly, and duratex. I can get whatever i dont have, no problem. I was thinking of an inlay of some type above the mouth as it looks like it has a huge "forehead" I also dint know if i want to round of the edges. My Klipsch LaScalas have straight edges and are very prone to chipping, so I would think a rounded edge may be wise? Any thoughts on finishes? Again we are moving so it will be a while.

If you're going to stain, only use General Finishes gel. I use the water bourne. It eliminates the blotching you can get from birch, and is highly controllable as to color. I've tried them all. For a natural finish, the danish oil looks really good, but I though it was a bunch of work. The wiping polyurethanes are easy and beautiful.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.
