Help from newbie

#1 Post by gabwey »

Good evening!

I have recently finished a pair of tritrix mtm and they sound reasonnably good to my taste although lacking a bit of bass. So, I am looking at building a TT-18. I also plan to buy a raspberry pi with a DAC to stream music to the system.

1- My question is how should I connect the 2 RCA connectors coming out of the raspberry Pi to the sound system?
2- Should I buy an amplifier that could power the tritrix and the TT18 or I would be better off having separate amplifier for the tritrix and the TT18?
3- Do I have to split the RCA coming out of the raspberry pi in order to connect to each amplifier?

Thank you for your help.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

First up, what's a TT-18? Do you mean a T18 from Bill's designs?

1. Connect the 2 x RCA's (one is for left, the other is for right) to say an Aux input on the sound system and press the Aux selector to on.
2, If you wanted an amplifier to do all three cabs, you would need a three channel amp. One channel left Tritrix, one right, one for sub. Lots of poeple use the PE plate amps for sub(s), meaning you can use one amp for both of your Tritrix's.
3. Do you have a sound system, or are you wanting to go straight from Raspberry Pi to the amps? If you have a sound system, see 1.

I can't find a response chart for the Tritrix's, well, at least not one that shows below 200Hz.
If you want to add a sub, you need to be able to split your signal into three outputs (left, right and sub), with a crossover. Using something like miniDSP, look that up.

Please give us a lot more information...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.

Thank you for the quick answer!

Yes I meant the Tuba 18, which seems small enough for my wife to accept it!

My trtrix are currently connected to an old Denon AVR-3300. Would it be powerful enough to drive the Tuba 18?

If I understand correctly, the correct way to connect everything would be :
Raspberry Pi -> miniDSP -> Amp for tritrix -> tritrix
|
-> Amp for subwoofer -> Tuba 18

Is there any advantages of having two separate amplifier (one for the tritrix and one for the subwoofer)? Does this allow to control the volume of the subwoofer seperately ?
Any recommendation on amplifier for the Tuba 18?

Thank you again

Can you find a link to the Denon AVR-3000 you have?
The one I found has a subwoofer preamp output.

Your receiver can drive LR and center. The sub must be powered with a separate amp. You use the subwoofer output (RCA jack) to run to a sub amp. If you tried to use the other power outputs, you'd be sending full range sound to the sub......you don't want to do that.....at all......ever....

This is the link to the specs. The user manual matches the received I have.

Any recommendation if I go the new amplifier way?

Is there something wrong with the Denon you already have?
It already has all the DACs etc, and the power to run your Tritrix's.

It also has a sub woofer preamp out to run the sub when you build it.
You would just use that to feed something like a Bash 300 plate amp.

How have you set up the menu?

Quite frankly, i never played with the denon before, Myt brother gave it to me and I just hooked it up to a CD player and to the speakers he also gave me. I just recently built my tritrix out of curiosity and hoping for a better sound than the speaker my brother gave me. So I will investigate more on how the Denon could handle the subwoofer, but I have read that the subwoofer pre-amp out has a filter at 80Hz. So maybe I would be better off using a normal output with some kind of filter to limit the signal to 200Hz.

I am trying to put together a shopping list to know how much the addition of the subwoofer would cost me.

thank you again for your help!

80Hz is good for subs in the home.
You don't want subs playing up to 200Hz!

I have found some info about lower response in the tritrix's here:
http://www.speakerdesignworks.com/Tritrix_pg_1.html

It says the transmission line version has acceptable bass down to 40Hz, F3 is just under 100hz.

Adding a sub would be good, up to 80Hz.

Get stuck into the manual for your Denon, and have a good play around with the menu options to see if you can improve the sound you're getting in the short term...

You don't run subs to 200Hz. 80Hz is the correct setting.
