WH10 build started

#1 Post by Preston »

Started building four WH10 this weekend. Found some nice BB in 5x5 at a small local lumber yard. Using kits from Leyland. Not much to show yet, still cutting out parts. Doing four at once will provide some efficiency gains, but that's still a lot of cutting to do. Hear's a teaser pic.

The horns in WH10's are so much fun. Looks like a good start.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Another little teaser pic. Here's the 8 horn mouths, 4 of each side mirror image.

Made a little progress. I've only got a few braces left to cut out and should start assembly this week. Here's a couple shots of the horn throats and the lay out for the baffle and spacer.

Made some good progress over the past few days. I felt pretty accomplished when I finally got all the parts cut out. As I stood looking at the pile of parts, I realized that I really should have considered flat packs from speakerhardware....

Finally started assembly. Here's the beginning of the horns. I painted the inside of the horn throats before attaching the bottoms.

Working outdoors in 90F+ temps was tough yesterday, but I stayed hydrated and got a lot done. Here's the horns and shells. One side of the shells is still temporarily attached with a wax paper barrier while I wait for the glue to cure.

I built three of the original design and it was a tough, intricate build. This design looks a little easier, but it's still a booger.

Your work looks really good.

I did build one of the original design and I think this a little easier, but I also have better tools and more experience, and make much better cuts. The horns actually went together more quickly than I expected. I did struggle with the shells a bit, but was able to regroup and get them together correctly before the PL set up.

I built this panel sled last night. Probably should have built it first... I'm having trouble with the runners binding in the slots, even though they slid easily and smoothly before I attached the top. I'm hoping I can locate the trouble spot and carefully trim with a sharp chisel. I used solid oak for the runners and push bar and MDF top.

Use some rust cleaner on the slots to get everything nice and clean, then run some steel wool in there. Once the slot are good, use some wax or silicone spray - then see if it slides better. If not, a little gentle sanding on the runners.

I put fences on both sides of my sled - it's way more stable and will last longer. Plus, you could make the right side of the sled shorter as that's your cut off end....that would make it a lot lighter and easier to push through.

Thanks for the tips Bruce! I especially like the fence idea. Is there any balance issues with one shorter side?

Nope, it's sitting on the table, so there is no reason the blade has to be in the middle.

I'll try to take a pic of mine and post it on here. It's been a workhorse for me. It just hangs on the wall waiting for it's number to be called.

A little gentle shaving with a sharp chisel and some more sanding and now the sled slides really nicely. I do think that I'm going to cut down the short side of the sled to reduce the weight and make it a little easier to handle.
