Birdhouses?

#1 Post by NukePooch »

Not sure if I read the plans properly, I thought I was going to build birdhouses...maybe they're birdhouses for turkeys?

Surprising how fast they're going together... Seems like it's taking less time than it did to build my two T48 Slims. These are four T48's, 32" wide, with 3015LF's.

It's interesting the comment about birdhouses. When a friend of mine saw the T48s half built, he arrived at the same impression.

I had them stacked up on the table, saw the center one out of the corner of my eye, and thought...hmmmm. :)

Had a couple weeks out of the garage due to commitments, but back at it again. A bit of sanding left for tomorrow, then paint.

Some thoughts:

-These things are huge. I've moved and used larger and much heavier subs before (EV MTL-4 springs to mind...and sore back...), but it's a whole different story when I've gotta sand the things. Over the past couple days I've tried to do the math, and I figured there's approximately 18 acres of surface that needed to be sanded for each cab. All that I've built so far (including oddball projects not listed in my sig) I've finished on 1 gal of Duratex (using cheap black latex for the first couple of primer coats)...It's a good thing that I got a new gallon from Leland, cause these are gonna soak up a bunch.

-I saved about $130 by switching to Geico. Wait, I mean I saved $130 by using Arauco ACX instead of Baltic Birch. The sheets are lighter, which helps when I'm handling them by myself. However, the 'C' side is very, very 'C'. I had a few sheets with a lot of voids on the back, so I had to watch what parts I was cutting. I figured it out when I cut one side, then noticed all the voids...that piece was turned into access covers and braces.

-Just by handling the cabs in the garage, the Arauco dented quite easily. I hope it will be different when I get plastic corners on, but it still seemed quite soft.

-Arauco is ok, but next time, it's back to Baltic Birch. Warping, edge chips, dents, and voids were a bit too annoying...

-4 3015LF's breaking in on the table still make a fair bit of noise. The 3012HO's I put I my Jacks were like a whisper in comparison. My Dad thought I left my air compressor on.

Hopefully I get to hear them bark in the next couple of days.

I remember that thread from way back. Musta come up in my subconscious when I looked at mine.

Nicely done. Love the duratex roof. Took you four years to build it...how long before you put it up in a tree and put out the 'For Rent' sign?

When I built my first T39 I could not find a local supplier of BB or 5 equal ply 1/2 inch wood so I threw one together with big box store A/C plywood, figuring it would be a prototype. 4 years later I'm still using it and though it is lighter than the rest of my herd, and sounds wonderful but is not nearly as durable. It chips more, requires more touch up paint etc.
