9 driver Curved SLA build

#1 Post by Stratispho »

Build started, have finished the cutting and routing on the front, still need to hand sand and then glue it together. I'm rear mounting the speakers and tweeters for a little cleaner look. I'll see how the cedar wood takes a dark maple stain, if it's not going well there's always a grill cover.

The front, sides, and back are all repurposed cedar that I had used on another project that was recently dismantled.

Looking great so far!

I'm looking forward to this build! I bought the plans a year ago with the THT and finished that one. I have not had the time to dive into the SLA yet, hoping this summer.

Looking great so far. What speakers are you going to use? Are you building 6 or 9 speaker version?

9 speaker version. Using these as the mains. They're a little high on the Qts at 1.3

Helpful hint, make sure your boards aren't cupped at all for something like this. It's making gluing the front together a PITA.

Spent some time last night and got all of the drivers wired and installed. I ordered the wrong size connectors for the tweeters. Hopefully the local Home Depot or Lowe's has them so I can finish up the wiring tonight.

If I build another one of these, I'm installing the drivers before I glue the sides on. The outer screws were really hard to get to.

Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale. I ran out of their Fresh Squeezed IPA so I had to switch.

What? They don't have Deschutes Black Butte Porter there?
If you are going to go with dark stain you should go dark beer...

Unless, for safety reasons, you purposely go the opposite so you don't accidentally drink a swig of stain while working.

I can get that at most grocery stores. I have a keg of homebrew clone on tap right now. I like to switch it up. Last night was a bottle of Crazy @#$% Double IPA while doing some reading trying to figure out the logic behind ports and the different diameters, shapes, lengths, and how they effect sound.

USPS says my SLA crossover is scheduled to be delivered today (thanks Leland!) so hopefully I can make some time to finish this up.

On to the home stretch, just need to wait for a coat of poly to dry and I'm calling it done. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow with it all done and without all the background clutter.

Question, the fill I'm using is one part cheap pillow and 1 part loose weave cotton insulation. Are those acceptable or do I need to go out and buy something better?

Hit quite a few layers of pretty hard, sappy, stuff when I was drilling the holes. Lead to some interesting absorption with the stain. You can also see a few spots where I used too much glue and got some squeeze out between the joints of front baffle. There aren't gaps on the front above and below the curved baffle portion, just odd shadowing and the jacoba bean stain seemed to like the edges and soaked up a ton of black.

Stuffing from old pillows is fine, just be sure to de-lice it first. :loler:

Yeah, you wouldn't want people nit-picking your speakers.
