Table Tuba 18 inch starts

#1 Post by andrewtilsley »

Pulled the trigger on this project for stereo music listening.

At this stage, I'll use one single horn to partner with my Azura horn system.

Target xover point is 80Hz.

I was lucky to have access to lovely Euro birch ply....9 layers per half inch. Zero warping will make for an easy build.

Opted for Tang Band driver, 8 inch.

Nice,
Jealous of you being able to access birch ply!

What happened to your plan to build a THT or dual loaded T24's?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Man, the decision killed me. But I made my choice based on a couple of factors, including:

Tuba18 was/is designed for max output…and operates better in higher frequency range.

Tuba18 would not have fitted in my Walnut outer cabs (I was out by about one inch).

THT ideal for home theatre, due to massive size and bass depth…plus harder to fit in my stereo listening set up.

As such, the TT rang the right bells…size, performance etc. I can always build a second one if needed.

It’s a strange sensation off-loading x2 18-inch pro subs for a single 8-inch sub….! But, I’m confident…besides, I love horns…and I simply want an all horn rig…and I’m ¾ way there.

Now, what to do with the mid bass range of 80-600Hz....?! :broke:

....and off-loading the big pro amp that ran the 2x 18's.
You will only need a little 200w or 250w amp now.

Normally true, but I'm using a quality six channel amp from Holton Precision Audio (Tasmania)...so that will stay in play.

Started glue up tonight.

Using screws to secure each panel...as they've been precision cut, the screws pull the panels perfectly square. Easy.

I haven't added baffle panel...so I'm completing it out of strict order.

Poly glue foaming up nicely.

Two panels need a few mm trimming. All the angles have worked out fine...except one panel where I cut the two angles the wrong way. Luckily, I have some spare ply to fix.

See pic to show how the levels our all true.

Used iPhone compass app to check vertical true.

You're using PL Premium, right? That doesn't look like PL squeeze-out to me for some reason.

Yes. That's not a good pic. Other sections of glue have bubbled up to be over half inch thick outside the join.

Don't be to harsh lol. PL premium, as far as I've been able to ascertain, is only available from one source here.
And minimum order is by the box.
So you will perhaps find some Aussie builds with Sika product or similar...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.

Phew.

I've built dozens of horns...and this product is excellent.

I debated getting the thicker Sika product (used with tube gun), but it was less economical.

It is very important that you test fit the driver into the baffle opening with all the screws to check for clearance and rubbing and make clearance adjustments if needed. Don't install so many panels that you cannot still do this.
