HELP Please!!

#78 Post by Rowan611 »

OK. So I've started. I've got the outline done, which was easy but time consuming.

Now I have my first issue, and in all honesty I've never understood this part.

Per the instructions on page 5

- "Through the middle of each joint drill pilot holes, 1/16 inch or so diameter,
about two inches from both ends of the joint. On the opposite face draw lines
connecting the holes, showing where to drive your fasteners. Clamp the second side to
the first. Drill through the holes in the first side all the way through the second side;
draw connecting lines on it the same as was done with the first."

Can anyone elaborate? In the picture I posted I have, where I believe to be correct, the places to drill marked. I have these on every joint (including the 4 angled braces). Why do I need to draw lines on the opposite side that the outline is on? I can understand on the second side, so I know where to nail when sealing up the sub. Should I put screws in the predrilled holes to get everything nice and synched down? My concern with that is splitting the plywood. Am I over thinking this?

Like I said I'm very visual and I'm having a tough time visualizing this part.

basically, drill some pilot holes through the center of the "panels" you drew onto side 1

clamp side 2 to the underside of side 1 and drill through the pilot holes you just drilled, again (this will "copy" the same holes to the 2nd panel). Then take out a sharpy and connect the relevant dots. Now, when you go to place side 2, you will have guidlines to drill more holes so you can secure the panel.

Thanks!! Got her done. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the access panel cut out and panel 1 installed. Hopefully. Still have to practice the access panel cut.

Well I managed to get the access panel cut out, the panels cut to width, and where the braces will be placed drawn on all panels. Would have got panel 1 installed, but I failed to remember building the 2nd sled for angles. I think I've got a quick fix, I'll know more tomorrow when my son isn't sleeping.

It's not pretty. Actually I hated cutting every side.

Ok, got my angle sled up and running - works great. Did a practice cut, measured and then lined everything up for the cut on panel 1. Cut awesome, nice and straight, good angle. Here's the bad news, it's 3/16ths short on the angled edge? I'm thinking I'm going to have to recut. I'm pretty sure I was going to have to go buy another 5x5 or 30x60. Should I just recut it? I could still place panel 6 in the right place, the edged of 1 and 6 just wouldn't match up. Would that affect anything? Really could use some solid input. Really pissed at myself.

Option #1 is to cut off a strip, then glue on a wider strip so that it will result in the correct length.
Option #2 is to nip off 1/16th, and then make sure that #9 panel is longer by ~1/2".
OPtion #3 is to make a brand new panel.
:)

Well I did none of those. :( I already secured it. I don't think it will be an issue. Panel 6 will still fit just fine. I can always add a strip if it really needs it. I've already cut and placed panel 2 in it's place. It fits well. I'll get it secured tomorrow, with 3 also.

Thanks for a least replying.

Well it's been few days and I've made some good progress. I've made some rookie mistakes and learned a lot from them. That being said, I just finished installing panel 4.

Here's panel 1 - really it's pretty square. I know I'll be fighting bowed wood the entire build. Right now I'm not too happy with the B/BB Baltic Birch I bought. I went through a bunch of sheets before settling on the 3 I did buy. If I build another I think I'll try the Arauco ACX.
Panel1.jpg
Panel1_1.jpg
Panel 2 - it's not square at the top. I haven't measured yet, but a rough estimate is 1/8" off. Could be more. I'll measure when I get panel 8 installed.

Panel2_5.jpg
No pics of panel 3, but it isn't perfect either. another lesson learned

Here is the baffle. Went really well, love the router and the Jasper Jig is so easy to use and made cutting these circles a breeze.

And panel 4 installed after making sure the driver worked well in it. Really liked putting some tones through it, can't wait to hear this driver once installed. Panel 4 is perfectly square. Like I said, I learned from panel 2.

Haven't updated this in awhile. Made some really good progress in the last few days. Today I got 8/9 braces in and tonight I got panel 10, 11, and 12 installed; 13 is cut and ready to go. Just have to cut out 14 and pick up some more BB. I might have enough for 7/11 braces, but I'm not sure. I'm not going to post any pics, Brysons build has much better pics and his build is very clean and well done. I'm pretty square, maybe 1/16th to 1/8th off - probably close to 1/16th.

NO, NO, NO... you don't seem to understand... WE DEMAND PICS!!! My builds (and my tools) are all over the shop... none of my cabs are square, but the whole point is that it doesn't matter - the cabs still sound great :) Think of it like a porno... if everyone fancied only the fit ones (think NiD's builds), then there would be no requirement for ugly (my builds), BBW (miked and his bulging braces) or even shemale (on1sony (=not following the plans)) porn. For sure, the fit ones are nice, but there's a whole lot more out there to discover. Therefore - SHOW US YOUR (SPEAKER) PORN!!
