T39: 4 x 20", 2 x 28" completed

#1 Post by Grant Bunter »

I promised pics were coming :)

After much umming and ahhhing and scratching my head I decided to go "easier" first.
That meant building some subs.
After plenty of advice I settled on T39's to use indoors and outdoors, mostly for live music and possibly some (not dubstep) DJ'ing if it came my way.
Over the years I have done a lot of woodwork, so measuring twice and cutting once was second nature, but never ventured into cab building other than those other type that resemble ordinary boxes made of timber.
The plans were well laid out and easy enough to follow.
Having said that, I did find that the plans required constant reference just to remind myself where I was going, and what was next. In each allotment of build time (it varied), I continued until it seemed natural to stop.
So day 1 was rough cuts and then panels 1, 2, and 3.
Day 2 was panels 4, 5, 6, 6 extension, 7 (what I found most difficult would you believe).
Day 3 was panels 8, 9, 10, 11.
I built one cab at a time.
While I know there are "better" drivers recommended, I chose BP102's for my cabs because they seem to suit my needs. I got them from Essential Audio http://www.essentialaudio.com.au/ (Now defunct sadly)
I decided on 20" wide, it seemed a fairly often recommended width and having built them, it turns out to be that way for me.

I didn't take pics along the way. My focus was entirely on building and I know what's inside, and what I went through to finishing. And there's plenty of "as you go" T39/T48 build threads.
Even after 2 I wouldn't want to be in a hurry or a deadline, so hats off to the authorised builders.
It has confirmed to me that building DR's is not beyond my reach, well not yet anyway lol

Thanks Bill for the fantastic designs!

Anyway, enough of the blurb...

Thanks bitSmasher and Donny!

It would have to be painted all black and polycarbonate wouldn't it?

Right then,
Bumped, because:
I was worried that my 2 x BP loaded cabs may not keep up with my DR250's, especially outdoors.
Since my first real test for my BFM rig will be an outdoor festival, I didn't want to be lacking in bottom end, trying to push things too hard.
It's often said here, don't turn up, add more cabs.
It's often said also, buy once cry once. Perhaps if I had bought 3012's I wouldn't be doing this.
However, locally, 4 x BP's are less than 2 x 3012's. In fact 4 x BP's are about the same as 1 x 3012 here!
So, I'm building 2 more cabs, which will also be BP102 loaded.
This should mean I won't need to dial back the tops and increase my audience capacity coverage.

Same same, I'm not going to do a detailed build sequence like my DR build thread.
But I have cut 2 V plates (to do 2 x 2 cabs) and started cutting my ply.

What it does mean is that I have pushed back some wedgehorn builds. If I knock these 2 T39's over in reasonable time I still might have time for the wedgehorns yet.
Hey it's only money right?

When it's all done, pics will show, that in the goodness of time, the little buggers breed...

I just did one stage of an outdoor festival with two DR200's and two T39's, 3012LF loaded. It sounded really good and I got compliments. Part of it was being in an amphitheater, but the bass filled it right up. I had 10db headroom on the board (probably less in reality) but if the place had filled up with sound-absorbing people, it may have not have been enough to maintain that volume. Super-clear sound -- a musician said he was amazed how clearly he could hear each instrument. The rock band's kick drum could be felt in your chest (not crushingly but present) even at the top of the hill (where the picture was taken). My favorite part was mic'ing a Native American hand-held, mallet-hit, drum and cranking the bass from it -- really powerful.

thanks Gauss,
Your mini review confirms what I was thinking regarding BP102's v 3012's

Glad to hear your gig went well :)
