OTop 15" with 5-string bass, anyone?

#1 Post by pahaeno » Sun Nov 17, 2019 5:44 am

Are there any bass players using OTop 15" woofer only with bass? Just wondering how does it behave and sounds compared to reflex box like simplexx? I have to admit that I like the size and looks of OTop 15", (yes I know, I should use my ears not my eyes but...) and after several reflex cabs builds I want to build something different.

At the moment I am using cab with Eminence Kappa 15A, design is quite close to Eminence "Larger Vented Cab". Used to have 2x15", then two 1x15" but now just one because it is enough. Planning to replace the driver with 3015 (allready ordered) for better everything.

But with OTop box, what do I gain, what do I lose?

You'd be much better off with a Jack 15 for bass. An OTop is designed to be used with subs.....

6 - T39 4-25" 2-22" 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512 Melded/NSD2005
1 - T24
2 - XF210

Yeah, Jack would be a good choice. Maybe just Jack 112 or 210, 15 is little bit overkill.

Have you looked at the SPL Charts for the different designs? viewforum.php?f=12

Otop 15 vs jack 15 aren't going to be drastically different.
I don't have any experience with the Otop 15 but the jack 15 was the first BF cab I ever built back in high school for bass guitar and it still gets used to this day. (When It will fit )

With the Otop being a dedicated top, it obviously won't go quite as low as the jack, but even in the main frequency range of the bass guitar say 150hz - 800hz it looks like the jack still has the edge if only by a small margin.

Jack vs Simplex?
The jack is going to be twice as loud with the same input settings. And stronger in the midrange.
Out of the box the simplex may sound like it "goes lower" but really it just has "less mids"
If that makes sense...

The primary power band for electric bass is 50-90Hz. The J15 has considerably higher sensitivity in that range than the OTop 15. The 10dB differential at 50Hz is huge. With 5 string, which has considerably more content below 50Hz than 4 string, there's no comparison.

I cut lows on stage if there is PA with subs, thats why I am thinking of an OTop15. Actually I do cut lows all the time, amp has a "subsonic filter" at 30Hz, pedal board has it somewhere between 40-45Hz and I have allso used amp with low cut filter at 50Hz. Eventough it is a bass, you don't always want and need that much...bass! OTop15 would not be very versatile cab with bass but it could be just perfect on stage.

Look at the chart again. The J15 rolls off below 50Hz. Use the OTop 15 if you want, but I don't, and I only have four strings.

There is not that big gap in low Bs first overtone 62Hz between Jack and OTop. And at this point I am just curious about how it behaves with bass when loaded with 3015. I don't mind to build it, try it and forget it if it sounds bad, if it goes like that then it goes. I like to build cabs, and I don't always try to think technically, maybe "musically"? If the cab is bad, I will throw it to bonfire during midsummer festival. Easy way to get rid of bad or in this case possibly wrong designs. Good cab, but for bass? -I just have to try.

1x15cab.jpg
WinISD SPL simulation of a 1x15" Kappa 15A bass reflex cab that I was planning to replace with OTop15. This is the first version without modifications that I made later, couln't find the latest version, propably I just did a "to do"-list and made the changes to slightly smoothen the curve, but SPL remained 97dB@60Hz.

Replacing Kappa15A with Kappalite 3015 does not make big difference.
