OTop 12 clipping way before limit.

#1 Post by Rickwired » Thu Aug 15, 2019 10:58 pm

Hey guys I built 4 OT12s and 1 of the 4 is clipping way before the set limit. I thinks it’s the crossover inside or one of its components but how would I go about checking?

I tested the others and can get them up to 30volts, the messed up one probably doesn’t even get to 10.
4- 29” tuba 30 w/ dual kappalite 3012lf
2 - 18” tuba 30 w/ 3012lf
4 - OT12 w/ 3012HO and crossfiring tweeter array

2 more OT12 w/ 3012HO and tweeter arrays in progress

Check to see if the filter is wired the same as the others. Check for loose connections throughout the cab. Check for faulty soldering connections. Unhook the tweet(s) on the faulty cab and check to see if it still happens. If not, do the same for the woofer. Basically, it's just a process of elimination.

Hook up just the tweeter section, no filter. At low power do the cardboard tube test. I bet you have a dead short in a tweeter.

A short in a tweeter is unlikely, when they blow they tend to go open. Disconnect the input to the high pass filter. If the symptom remains you've ruled out the high pass filter and tweeters. Then bypass the low pass filter, going direct to just the woofer. If it works OK the low pass filter is AFU. OTOH if the symptom goes away when you disconnect the high pass filter then bypass it, going direct to the tweeters. That will rule out or confirm either the filter or the tweeters as the fault.

I've had them do both. The dead short took forever to figure out, symptoms matched. And true, typically they do open
