Phase plug question.....

#1 Post by Bigcox4002001 » Sun Dec 09, 2018 3:07 pm

I've read a ton about the necessity of phase plugs, shapes, etc... But what is the effect if your phase plug is too large or too small? How much impact is there on the finished product?
Otop 12 x 4 (Delta Pro 12-450a) 2x melded, 2x straight
Titan 39 (3012LF) 20" wide

If it's the wrong size the speaker won't work as well. The best size was determined by testing.

Are you specifically asking about the phase plug in Otops?
Or those snazzy looking dodads you see poking out the front on some drivers?

Doesn't much matter, the purpose of phase plugs is to modify response, increasing mids and/or higher frequencies (depending on the driver being a woofer or a HF driver).

If your question is more about the Otops, then, if the plug is to large, it can cause cone rub, and affect response detrimentally.
To small, it doesn't end up doing what it's meant to do.

Has this question come up because you build the wrong size phase plugs in your build?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 (melded array) with March 2012 plans. 2 more under way with CD horn
T39's: 4 x 20" BP102 , 2 x 28" 3012lf.
WH8: x 3 with melded array.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

No my phase plugs are correct. But when I was building the 4th Otop I read the plans through again and almost had a heart attack because I thought I had installed the incorrect size. After researching ways to remove the phase plugs (to no avail) I decided the read the plans again and realized I was worrying over nothing. But then I wondered what the impact would be. Just a question from curiosity. And it wasn't specific to the Otops. Not sure why I posted it here. My bad
