Trying to find some Jack 15 pics

#1 Post by Bruce Weldy » Tue Jun 25, 2019 10:22 am

Been trying to search the forum for a Jack 15 build or some good pics. Haven't had any luck. I know they aren't as common as the 10s and 12s.

Any one have a link to a build or some pics? Looking to possibly build one as a woofer only bass cab.

The J15 is far less popular than the J10 and J12, probably because of the size. I hardly ever use mine, my J12 is enough for any indoor gigs.

Yep....trying to help a friend decide on what he wants to build. Already has a driver that is in spec for the J15.

Sorry for the terrible job documenting the build process, but here are a few pics.
There are a couple of the baffle, then a couple showing them complete and in actual use.
In the pic with the outdoor stage, they are on stage with some Wedgehorn 10's... In the pic of the DJ set, that is 5' of truss in between - if you want a size reference.

If I recall, the build process wasn't terribly difficult.
This was back in 2011.
I still have them, but they don't get a lot less use these days.

When I built them, I was hoping they would work for smaller gigs to keep me from bringing subs but over the years I realized it was actually much easier to just bring some smaller tops and wheel a couple of T39's in - given the huge increase in low end with the subs. As tops with subs, the J15 is simply overkill.

They weight right about 50 pounds. For years I didn't have handles on them - that made them a real pain to move around given their near cube shape, not to mention hoisting a 50 pound cube up on a pole is not easy when you are flying solo and starting to age a bit ;) (even if I laid them down and walked the pole up, it gets a little uncomfortable.)
Last year I finally added handles, protective corners, a proper jack plate, and upgraded the drivers to a neo (and gave them a fresh coat of Duratex and tightened up the grills) - and that helped a LOT (they lost about 5 pounds each), but they're still not my favorite. With the ferite magnets, I had to offset the pole mount and that made them look very weird on the poles, even if it was right at the cabinets center of gravity. The Neo's allowed me to move the pole mounts/top hats more to the center.

Anywho, here is the link to the now 8-year old pics:

I'll try to add a few pics since I did the upgrades, but searching through my photo library I see I didn't take any pics while I was doing that either. I'll try to do better ;)

Tim

Thanks for posting, but I went ahead and built one!

Just finished up and posted the build.

Thanks again.

Oh cool. I'll have to check out your thread.
How are you liking the sound of it for Bass Gtr duties?
Thanks,
Tim

Well, not being a bass player, I've just played through it for a few minutes. The owner will be picking it up when he gets back from vacation.....then we'll see if we did good or not.....

Cool. I just read through your build thread.
Great Job! Looks wonderful and I love the amp rack!

I'll check back to see how your Bass playing, drumming, sound running, speaker lifting friend likes them.
Thanks.

(Good call to go with the 2515 over the BW - I used to carry around a bunch of BW's back in the day and YES they are heavy, have crummy Xmax, and need a LOT of cabinet volume (but you can pull them apart in the field and replace the entire basket for a handful of dollars less than buying a completely new woofer if you don't count your extra labor of having to unbolt/bolt the magnet AND assuming you don't bend the voice coil putting it all back together ;) LOL) In all fairness though, I used to have some of those 3-way Peavey 118 International full-range cabinets built around the 18" BW back in 1989 and they sounded great for what we were playing and the venues we were playing in... but back then I could lift them and carry them by myself... that would not be the case now a full 30 years later ;)

A friend of mine still has a pair of the Internationals in his studio for practice.....decent sounding boxes....just heavy.

I was surprised at the lack of xmax on those drivers - especially since they are in all of their bass cabinets.
