3015 in a J15 or a DR250

#1 Post by bcampbell » Fri Aug 11, 2017 3:29 pm

Quick questions. I haven't bought the plans for either of these, but plan to.

I have a DL2510 in a J10 and an old 3015 (not the LF) that is currently in an old Omni Lowboy (yes, old).

My issue is the J10 doesn't quite cut it in the low end (I blew one speaker already with a drop D and not minding the volume knob.) The Omni is way too big to haul to practice on a regular basis (I generally use this when we do outdoor gigs for backline.)

I'm trying to split the difference and build something with more low end with a speaker I currently have. (Yes I recognize a J12 would like be ideal, but I'd rather not have to sell of the two speakers I have to go that route unless recommended.) I'm between the DR250 (which I believe the DL2510 works well in) and the J15.

I'm playing through an Eden Traveler 550...which is why I'm leaning towards the J15, as the 3015 can take the volts. This is only for backline and practice, I go through the board (and into 2 T39s and 2 OT12!)

Any advice? Other options I'm not seeing?

Sure the 2510 can be used in a DR250.
And the 3015 can be used in a J15.

I would think the J15 would be a better option for bass, as adding the porting option to a DR250 to make it go low enough to handle bass as a bass cab reduces it's power handling by about half. That porting lowers tuning to 40Hz ish.

Your only issue then is, you've taken the driver out of your Omni. You don't want to swap drivers all the time...

Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Thanks Grant.
The J15 seems a bit better on the build simplicity as well.

I'd likely just retire the Omni. Maybe play some Taps. It has served me well.

Any advice on the number of tweeters? I'm thinking six crossfired. I don't want too much.

Whatever you think is right.
Do the half/full on.off option from Harley so you can adjust to taste as well...

If the J10 is not cutting it on the low end for you, neither will the DR250. I play through a twin stack of the DR250 and find that I want more from the low G and down (I use a dropped D as well). The bottom cab has the 4" port tubes and the top cab has the 1/4" port. Therefore, I suggest the J15.

Is this for outdoors? If it is for indoors, the T39s should be giving you the bottom end. If indoors, using the J15 may cause interfernce with the subs. That, or your J15 would be nuetered so that it does not cause interference.

I have a pair of J15 that I use for bass guitar backline. No tweeters. They sound great and provide plenty of low end without being overbearing. Be forewarned: they are a big cube, although surprisingly light. Transport might be an issue due to the bulky shape. I would make a cardboard mockup to make sure it fits in your vehicle.

I also use a pair of J15s for bass. I quite like the end result, plenty of mids and sufficient bass.
