Speaker choice in a XF 210

#1 Post by Bbr6704 » Tue Jan 08, 2019 9:10 am

Hello there, been a while...

I'm currently building a XF 210 guitar cab.

As I made a XF 212 three years ago, loaded with Celestion creamback that I like (but cab is too big and heavy for my taste and needs nowadays, so I'm downsizing...), I was thinking to go with celestion G10 Greenbacks : https://celestion.com/product/31/g10_greenback/

I'll play with a Quilter head (wonderfull solid state amps), and for their cabs, they use the Celextion Tf 1018, that every user seems to love.

Here are the specs and frequency response curve : https://celestion.com/product/108/tf1018/

Can someone tell me the main differrences between these 2 speakers, as I'm not used to these curves etc. (reading and understanding...)

I'd mainly like to know how could the Tf1018 sound compared to the greenback, known to rock (woody tone, tight bass, good trebble, not ear blleding...)

Thanks in advance! ;)

The first one is available in 8 or 16ohm......the second one is 8ohm only. Your best bet is something in 16 ohm so that you can have them paralleled for an 8 ohm load. Then the cab is usable with any amp out there. Two 8ohm speakers will force you into either a 4 ohm load or 16. Not where you want to be.

As far as which sounds better......the curve doesn't look all that different. You won't really know until you hear 'em.

Without full T/S specs for the Greenback one can't make a comparison.

Hi there,
I also asked the question on a Quilter dedicated page, and the main answer is that the TF1018 is originally designed to be used in PA systems. It's flat, neutral and strong, where the Greenback is a rock guitar speaker... The second distorts earlier, and has this kind of "british DNA" in it...

So I'll opt for the greenback, I love this kind of tone, and I guess I'll be happy with it!

I wouldn't use it for PA. Xmax is only 2mm, so it wouldn't go very loud before distorting. That xmax might be more than the Greenback, 1mm xmax isn't unusual with guitar drivers, but for PA 3mm is what I'd call the bare minimum.
