Another noob, jig question?

#1 Post by Cheerwino »

Hi all,

Just wanted to introduce myself and thank the regulars for their helpful posts. I appreciate how focused and well managed the forum is without much bickering and rambling posts. So kudos to Bill and the posters!

I'm looking to build an Auto Tuba (not sure which orientation) for a Subaru Outback. I just happen to already have a JBL GTO 804 driver, which I understand is often used in the AT.

Do I need the panel jig plans for this build? I'm familiar with the general idea of table saw jigs and sleds but I'm not clear on exactly what Bill's jig does or looks like (despite forum searches). Which cuts on the AT would I use the jig for? Any pics or info is appreciated. I mean, it's not much money but I'm trying to understand what I'm getting myself into here.

Background: Located in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. Fair amount of tools and DIY experience but not much in fine cabinetry (caulk is my friend). I've installed a few car audio systems but have never been happy with the bass from my small sealed cabs. I do own a set of Ed Shilling's rear loaded horns from The Horn Shoppe, so I am familiar with some of the issues and advantages of horns.

Thanks!

Shouldn't. The panels should be short enough to run both directions through a table saw without a sled.

I only use a sled when cutting long boards and they are too wide to fit on my Miter Saw.

I use my panel jig whenever I cut a panel on the table saw. The only time I don't use it is with long narrow rip cuts, where the rip fence works better.

I've only used the circular saw sled jig (don't have a table saw). I made a few in different lengths for ease of use. A great part about them is you can make them outta scrap ply and throw them away when they get beat up.

Another handy jig to make is the right angle jig (looks like B-2 bomber) for gluing joints but not getting it on the jig. Also, a box of screws to hold the joint while the glue dries. If you build it right with PL glue you don't need screws.
There are a bunch of other jigs people have made here that are pretty cool. But you really only need basic tools to build these on here.

Make a build thread when you start so we can help

Thanks for the responses!

Any recent changes to the Auto Tuba plans that would make the JBL GTO804 8" driver no longer fit?

JBL GTO 804 driver dimensions:
4 5/16" mounting depth
7 1/16" cutout dia
8 1/4" outer dia

Nope.....still in the plans I have. And I don't see any updates.

It's no longer being produced.

Thanks Bruce. Hey Bill, I already own that driver, so I was just checking to make sure the plans had not changed in a way that meant the GTO804 no longer fit for some reason. Will be placing my order with you soon. Thanks!
