Hello, from not so sunny London, UK

#1 Post by AKC1 »

Hi Everybody,

I have been lurking, observing and learning on these forums for the last six months or so and it has been so interesting!

My background:
Always loved music and technology(Big time geek).Did a uni degree in Audio technology and also fell in love with the less the mainstream variety's of electronic dance music and got into DJing.
Always been a tinkerer and practical so the idea of building my own speakers definitely appeals. Never heard any of Bills designs in the flesh but reading all the glowing reviews on this forum and others I can't wait to get started!

SO...
Bought the plans for T30s, OT12s, T18s and Simplex 15 sealed sub(Need to get the CD...)

Definitely going to build the OT12s as tops for parties but a little undecided on subs.. I got a great deal on 2x LAB 12s which were originally going to be for T30s but after reading a thread (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=11683&hilit=tht+dubstep) where a user had success using his THTs for small gigs I am now not so sure on the T30s?? The music being played through the subs will always be quite bass heavy electronic music and the subs will perform dual purpose of doing small gigs and parties and household HiFi/HT duties. I have the digital processing that I believe will be enough to get a flat frequency response out of the T30s but the THTs will need less processing and will extend lower with the LAB12s.

It would be great to hear your thoughts on this and thank you in advance for any help/advice

Alex

T30s go as low as any music requires, have higher sensitivity and are considerably smaller than THT. If your primary usage is HT then THT is the preferred cab, but I wouldn't want to schlep a pair of those to gigs.

Thank you Bill, appreciated. In terms of subjective quality of the sound and factors like distortion are the two subs similar? also can you v couple THTs?

Thanks

If you're concerned about low frequencies and want them played loud then get to building some Lab12 T60s as wide as you can manage in as large a number as possible. I have 2 at 18" wide and they were enough for loud (116db at the back wall) low bass in a 250 person capacity joint playing all sorts of bass heavy dance music. If I were doing it again I'd build wider for more output but the setup certainly wasn't lacking in terms of sound quality or frequency range.
4xOT12s, 2xT39s@22", TTLS@18", 2xT60@18"

Welcome to the forum!

Sound qualities will be similar between the two...clean and accurate. The THT's will not really benefit from V-plate, but, placed side by side will give an extra 6db as with any sub.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

I only read page one of the thread you linked. The THT isn't designed for pro sound use. Despite that thread, it shouldn't be used for pro sound purposes, and least not when there are pro sound cabs to fill your requirements.

So sure, build some THT's for home. Build pro sound for parties.
I have the digital processing that I believe will be enough to get a flat frequency response out of the T30s but the THTs will need less processing and will extend lower with the LAB12s.
EQ is one thing, but your processing capability must include "brick wall" limiting for parties. What are you using?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Thank you 88, Tom and Grant,

T60s would be fun but definitely a bit on the large size for me..Think i will go for the two T30s as originally planned, probably 24" wide each. I have a timber merchants round the corner from me that sells good ply will get my girlfriend to go on a couple of "walks to shop with me". Fingers crossed its not windy when walking back home 8'x4' sheets.. :fingers:

Grant i will be using a Biamp Nexia SP to do processing (4in, 8out, limiter, EQ, Crossover, Delay with the advantage of FIR phase correction filtering).

Thank you all for your help and will fire up a build thread when ready!

Hey Alex. Just checked out the specs on your unit as I was unfamiliar with it.
It has a dynamic control compressor/limiter, but not a brick wall limiter, which is what you need to protect your drivers...

The T30 will suffice nicely for both HT and DJ use, that would be my choice. Saves you having to build two different types of cabs.
Built:
6 T30 (24", 3012LF)
2 OT12 (MA, 3012HO)
2 T24 (18", 3010LF)

Running:
DCX2496
XTi 2002
XTi 4002
TRAKTOR Z2
TECHNICS 1210 Mk5's

I would take a closer look at the often ignored T45.

To compare sizes:
T45 45" x 24" x 24" = 25,920 cubic inches or 15 cubic feet
T45 45" x 24" x 15" = 16,200 cubic inches or 9.4 cubic feet
T30 30" x 30" x 27" = 24,300 cubic inches or 14 cubic feet

The T30 is a pain the backside to get through small UK doors and although you can't vplate a T45 (loosing 3dB), you can stand them upright against rear walls which is great if you have a tiny booth to DJ with.

Chris.
Built:
6xDR200, 2xT39, 2xT48, 2xJack110, 1xOmni10.5, 1xAutotuba, 1xT18, 1xSLA Pro, 1xW8, 1xW10

That is interesting! had kind of passed over the T45 as I thought it had a a similar response to the T30. That graph shows quite a different response, louder and smoother. I like it. Just built a cardboard mock up and size looks acceptable too.

Is that graph a measured response or simulated?

You say you can stand them on their end, is that with mouth up or down. If down I take it they need to be raised?
