Greets from Austin, Texas

#1 Post by whines »

I'm finishing up my fifth cab so I suppose I should say hello. :)

I work for KLRU-TV in Austin, where I do IT, but effects lighting is a hobby of mine. After a rocky experience working with a teenager who was running sound (never again! ...I say this, anyways) I decided that I should just learn to do it myself.

I don't have any professional reason to do this stuff, just fun--church and charity events. I just used the semi-complete rig for a 4th of July party for the first time, and I'm confident that I have enough firepower to deal with any event I'd reasonably do.

Totally dependent on friends with pickups for transport, though...what was I thinking, building Jack 15's when I drive a subcompact? Oh well, live and learn and plan on a bigger car, I suppose. :)

Cartooning is one of my other hobbies, and I've gone with 'Pop art' for the theme on my speakers, sharpie over Kilz primer with a protective layer of polyacrylic. Since I have no plans to use them commercially I'm indulging myself!

Seriously though, it's nice to see we are covering the SA-Austin corridor now with you, me, and Mike.

Congrats on all the builds, EQ-ing issues, ...and oh, welcome!

I forwarded your artwork to my wife, with the suggestion that if I build another speaker, she can paint/illustrate away. She went for it! :hyper:

I've actually considered painting my cabs up all special like. I'd dearly love to bust out a custom snow camo paintjob at some point. Maybe when I've done a few more.

I haven't checked this forum in forever.

Welcome, fellow Texan! Your cabs look incredible! You did all that with a SHARPIE? Holy crap, Michaelangelo! I write my name with a sharpie and the letters don't even come out the same size. You've got incredible artistic talent.

More importantly, how come we've never seen a Build Thread from you? :cop: Maybe one day we can get a Texas BFM Meet & Greet going. I know we've got a couple guys in Houston and a couple in the Dallas area too.
