At least hood and bonnet are reasonably close, both being headgear where clothing is concerned. How one gets from trunk to boot only a mad dog or Englishman can explain.

In the very early automobiles, there was a place at the rear for the mechanic to go along for the ride. There was a seat for him called the Dickie Seat and I would imagine a ledge of sorts where his legs ( and boots ) would rest. Luggage ( especially gumboots because roads were mostly muddy ) would most likely have been placed in this areas "by his boots" . So I am guessing that as this ledge became more enclosed, the Poms still referred to this luggage storage place as where 'the boot' would go....I dunno :noob:

Because we had to endure 'English mastery' here in the Antipodean Colonies up until mid 20th century, we were forced to adopt their Mad Dog phrases and habits. In fact some of them still try and morally enforce their air of superiority! :wall:

Or certain demographics of Americana. Aren't "Trunk" and "Booty" both slang references to one's posterior? For instance, the phrases "too much junk in the trunk" and "too much booty in the pants" both refer to a large-bottomed person.
99% of the time, things that aren't already being done aren't being done because they don't work. The other 1% is split evenly between fools and geniuses.

The stuff they stole would atleast buy them some booty when they got to port.

With very early English automobiles, perhaps. And not so early as well. One always had to buy two British Leyland cars, one to drive, one for the shop.

In recent years, more and more Hollywood films are using car instead of automobile. Are you guys still using au-to-mo-bile?
