from the streets of wisconsin!

#1 Post by idsonnenfeld »

Hey everyone! Just a newbie here hoping to listen and learn. I'm not entirely new to the sound reinforcement world, but it might be best to pretend I am.

I feel like I have so many questions I don't even know where to begin...

How about this: pairing speakers with amplifiers. Something I never could wrap my head around. What's the trick?

Looking forward to chatting with the brain-trust here!

"Pairing speakers with amplifiers." I am not quite sure what you mean by that, but the first thing to realize on this site is that watts are meaningless in several ways:

First, watts cannot be measured, so this forum speaks in terms of Volts. Voltage can be measured. All the plans for subs here give a voltage limit, not watts.

Second, watts are used as a marketing tool, for tools that don't know better. Subwoofer drivers are measured in watts for thermal limits. In a speaker cabinet, the maximum voltage is given to prevent over excursion of the driver, causing blown drivers. In a horn, you do not hear the driver bottoming out crying out for help, so you keep cranking it up -- until catastrophic failure. Limit your cabs' voltage to save drivers.

Third, these speakers make huge spl on relatively small "wattage." That is the gift of efficient horn loaded designs.

Read on -- there is a lot to learn.

And Welcome to your first day of class!

G'day and welcome from an Aussie :)

Do you mean running 2 cabs on 1 channel of your amp?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Real chatty there mate.

Start off with what your goals are for sound and the brains trust will be all over telling what you need in the way of cabs and amps.
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.
