Jack 10 and XF 2x10 out of 1 8x4, Australian birch?

#1 Post by norv »

Hi, I'm a guitarist and (as of one week) bassist from Australia.
I'm looking forward to getting some plans and getting started on a couple of cabs.

I have two questions:
Is it possible to build a Jack 10 and an XF 2x10 out of one 8 by 4 (2400x1200) sheet of ply?
What ply are Australian builders using?

Thanks,
Norv

Welcome to the forum Norv.

Theoretically you could get those cabs out of one 8 x 4 ( 1220 x 2440 ) sheet, but it's so tight it's unrealistic. One small cutting mistake and you're history.

In addition, Australian Hoop Pine is in 1200 x 2400 sheets.

See if you can get one full and one half sheet. Some specialist ply shops here do 1/2 sheets of the popular grades.

Gday NORV, good to see another Aussie jumping on the BFM bandwagon. Bills cabs are unreal. Be real careful buying Ply from Bunnings, make sure you really hunt out a good piece. Even ply is the biggest thing you want to look out for.

I just finished a couple of T39's in Sydney. I had planned on using Hoop Pine as per Harley s recommendation, but it seemed a bit expensive for me at the time, so I used Arauco instead.

The biggest cost I found with Bill's cabs is the investment in time. That being the case, go with the more expensive wood, its going to be more durable in the long run, which is what you want right.

Another member 'BassMe' is from Brisbane and was looking to get some drivers over from America not long ago. You guys are kind of close, it may be worth your while sending him a PM and pooling resources for the shipping and stuff.

What are you planning on using to coat your cabs? Next time around I'd just bite the bullet and get Duratex shipped in from the US.

If you've already started.... hows your build progressing anyway?

Hi TH,
Haven't started on the build yet, got the plans and nothing else...
Researching driver availability and ply, tossing up options..
I'll send bassMe a PM, thanks for the lead!
More later ;)

Cheers Norv, once you're done being horrified with the Australian retail prices of the required BFM gear, there are two websites you will want to research further.

1) ShipIto, they will provide you with an American address for about 8 bucks, offer the cheapest international shipping rates allowing you to enjoy the benefits that US guys have of buying their speakers and stuff @ prices favorable to all. The retailer of your choice sells you the product, to your US address like any other American, then ShipIto ship it to you.

2) SpeakerHardware, your one stop BFM shop. Compare prices with PartsExpress and you will find SH cheaper every time. Any advice you seek regarding hardware Leland will always have a solution for you at a top price.

I feel your pain, shipping does add up a bit, but its still cheaper than buying here - seriously

I looked at shipito, but parts of the site weren't functioning, which scares me a little...
Leland can't get the Basslite S2010 into speakerhardware.com for love or money right now, the 12" cab would be too heavy for this little wood duck...
The Sica 10" bass drivers are the only non-Eminence drivers I've found that meet Bill's specs for Xmax etc.
The Lorantz Greenback 10" 30W are a local option for the XF210, but they're a little heavier, being non-neo.

And re finishing the cabs, I got as far as Mitre10's paint dept. where they have a non-skid additive (sand?) that will go in any durable paint.
I also took advantage of a new Spotlight store opening sale recently, and grabbed a few meters of Tolex-y vinyl, and a tweedy cloth that might go well lacquered on a la those Swart and Fender tweed amps.

Hmmm, if the website was playing up a few months ago I wouldn't have used it either. I spent most of my time pestering the actual shiptio staff via email, sussing out if they were real or not. They did good for me, always a risk sending the hard earned across the earth on a promise though aye?

Vinyl and Tweed look schmick as, retro style never dies!

You could always hunt out drivers on ebay, at least if you use pay pal its pretty secure and rip off proof. I bought my amp from an ebay seller for a song and it was delivered from US within 5 days.

Good luck brother, if you make the effort and enjoy building things you'll have a blast 8)

For the top cabs like J10 the T/S specs are only part of the story. Bill designs them around the rising midrange response of the eminence drivers.
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.

Bit late on the uptake given the post dates..

I read somewhere in one of the plans, at some stage, the Auraco had in brackets beside it Radiata pine.
I know there's a factory in Wagga Wagga that produces this and ships it all over Australia.
Look up Ausply...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

As long as it's around 12mm thick, with a minimum of 5 equal plies(read: no thin veneers!) it's fine. Harley recommends Australian Hoop Pine as an alternative plywood.
I know money often seals the deal, but seriously, quality is an investment, not an expense... Grant Bunter
