OT12 or J112, using Kappa Pro 12s
OT12 or J112, using Kappa Pro 12s
Hi all! I know the Kappa Pro 12 is not the prefered driver for either of those boxes, but I have six of the darn things, and I want a "first taste" of these boxes. My eventual plan is to build multiples of the DR280, using the 3012HO, along with an appropriate number of T48s. For now, for ease of build, and the fact that I already own the KP12s, I want to start with a "square" box. Which would you build, and why? To me, not knowing how they would perform with the KP12s, I am on the fence. The Jack looks good for the "don't always need subs" quality, but then the OT12 looks good for the "louder/smaller" thing....
Suggestions?
Thank you,
Lee

Hi! And welcome!
So. I was wondering....basically, do you have an idea of what you would like, or need? Such as, tops and subs, or one size fits all. Because of the cab efficiency probably they would work best in the OT12, I dunno. What I can say is that even though it is outside of the "10 %" parameters, it will be better than elsewhere.

Kappa Pro 12s aren't recommended for any of our cabs as they are very heavy and don't work better than, or for that matter as well as, other drivers half their cost and weight. But in cabs where the specs are appropriate they will work.

So then I should not bother using them at all?? Paper weights??

I've used a pair of Kappa Pro in a OT12 / T39@22" and I'm very pleased with the result for 4 string bass and small house parties . However, I can't compare my rig with anything made using the most recommended drivers, and I don't see me doing measurements and producing charts.
Anyway, if you don't bother using them, you can still send them to New Zealand where we're not awash with choices.
The KP is a hell of a heavy beast indeed. Imagine two in a decently sized 3/4" MDF box, and you'll understand why a T39 is actually so enjoyable to move around.

Well... regardless of the ddriver type.... why not build 2 Jack 112s, and 4 OT112? anything you need 4 OT for, you will more than likely be running subs. anything you need less than that, you can just run the 2 jacks, and you might not need subs.
Built:
2x Tuba 30s delta12lf loaded (gone)
4x Otop12 d2512 loaded
8x t48s (18, 18, 24, 24, 30, 30) 3015lf loaded
2x AT (1 mcm, 1 gto 804)
2x SLA Pro (dayton pa6, 6 goldwood piezo loaded)
1x bastard XF208
2x OT212 (delta pro 450a loaded, eminence psd)

I second this. Since building 4 jacks and two otops would not make any sense. Not to mention one can crank out a pair of those cabs in a weeks.sine143 wrote:Well... regardless of the ddriver type.... why not build 2 Jack 112s, and 4 OT112? anything you need 4 OT for, you will more than likely be running subs. anything you need less than that, you can just run the 2 jacks, and you might not need subs.
As for the subs and DR's: Only the premium drivers and nothing less.
Built:6 t39, t18, 4 Jack10, 2 autotuba, 2 SLA,2 wedge, 2 TT, 2 Tritrix, curved sla, 2 otop212, 2 SLA pros, Ported 8" sub, 2 ported 210, dual ported 8" sub

I think I will do six Otops. Don't want two different types of boxes for what will end up being the "B" system anyway. Since I will build DR280s soon, having multiples of those, then Otops AND a pair of Jax seems a bit much. I have small, full range-ish tops to use for SOS gigs already.
Thanks guys!

haha... I'm sure you could at least recoup cost of materials if you were to sell off the jacks, or the Otops for that matter.
You could even consider just selling off those drivers and buying deltalite II 2512s, since they are near Identical in price.

Re: OT12 or J112, using Kappa Pro 12s
Yes, my price for those two drivers is within about five bucks of each other. That said, I doubt I can get anywhere near what the KP12s cost for used ones, so I am kinda stuck with them.
