You could probably do it with an adze and a mallet, but it would take considerably longer.
Never factor tool costs into a build. You should be using them for far more than just building speakers.

I've spend a lot on tools over the years, but I've saved thousands on doing things myself that I would have had to pay someone else to do......and there is no satisfaction like knowing you built it yourself....

Like a nice adirondack chair for a friend....

For cutting the panels, all you really need is a saw. If it's only a handsaw, so be it. The most versatile saw for these builds is a jigsaw, of which you can make a sled to make sure that you get straight cut-lines.

get a least 8 pipe clamps 4-54" and 4-30"

This will make your life alot easier and I use my lifting weight plates for final assembly of side panels.
