I've built a cab from what's called Arauco plywood. 1/2", 5 ply. It works well, is void-free and best of all takes a Duratex finish as well as Birch but costs at least 1/3 less. It also weighs less than Birch. Two thumbs up.
This is the only plywood I've found at Lowe's that's any good. Their 'birch' is crap, with a thin outer veneer. The same for 'blondewood', it looks good at first glance, but has a very thin outer veneer that will delaminate. The Arauco has five equal thickness plies, no veneer.
As for HD, nothing they have is useful for cabinet building.
